PhD student in polyploid evolution

The Bomblies group at ETH Zürich is seeking a PhD student with an interest in studying the evolution of polyploids.

Project background

Polyploids are organisms with doubled genomes. This is particularly common in plants, but has played an important role in the evolution of eukaryotes very broadly. Genome duplication itself affects core traits such as cell size, metabolism and other traits, and many of these represent challenges that must be overcome by evolution. In our lab, we study how polyploid lineages adapt to the very changes caused by genome duplication itself – including challenges such as cell size increase, perturbations in meiosis, etc.

There are many open research areas, and the possibilities for developing projects are wide. Specific projects will be developed by the student in discussion with Prof. Bomblies.

Job description

Develop independently (with guidance) a research project. Perform research in the lab, as well as scholarly research to develop the project. PhD students are also expected to assist with teaching practical courses and participate in the institute seminar series. The PhD student will be enrolled at ETH Zürich in the PhD program of the department of Biology. The student will have access to lab and office space, as well as computing facilities and resources, microscope facilities, genomic facilities, etc.

Your profile

We seek an “out-of-the-box” thinker interested in any of the main research areas in the lab: https://impb.ethz.ch/research/research-evo/Research.html . You must be motivated to learn, think creatively and independently, and integrate well into the lab group. The operational language of the lab is English.
