PhD student in neuroscience
100%, 3–4-year appointment
This position is an exciting opportunity for a Ph.D. student with a background in computational neuroscience or a related quantitative field to work on an interdisciplinary, cutting-edge neuroscience project that employs advanced signal analysis while directly interfacing with clinicians and working on real-world clinical data.
The project
High frequency oscillations (HFO) in scalp EEG are currently investigated as potential biomarkers of epileptogenesis and treatment response. The Ph.D. student will use signal-processing techniques to analyze EEG recordings performed in pediatric patients with focal lesional epilepsy and validate the reliability, utility, and relevance of scalp HFO as novel biomarkers. The research group offers advanced, interdisciplinary Ph.D. training and participation in cutting-edge clinical neuroscience research projects, drawing from broad expertise (Cserpan et al., Brain Communications 2021; Cserpan et al., Scientific Reports 2022).
The setting
The Ph.D. student will be based at the EEG/Epilepsy department of Kinderspital Zürich with additional access to interdisciplinary meetings of related research groups at the University of Zürich/ETH Zürich.
Your responsibilities
- Develop and execute analyses of scalp EEG, including high-density EEG
- Test hypotheses regarding the validity of HFO as an epilepsy biomarker
- Participate in high-density EEG recordings in pediatric patients
- Present work in peer-reviewed journals and (inter)national conferences
- Contribute to the supervision of junior team members
Your profile
- Master's degree in a quantitative field (e.g., neuroscience, biomedical science, mathematics, physics, engineering, or related fields) (essential)
- Coding skills in at least one high-level language (e.g., Matlab, Python, R) (essential)
- Background in the neuroscience of neurological disorders (desirable)
What we offer
The PhD student will participate in the ZNZ doctoral program for additional theoretical/practical training and receive a Ph.D. from the Faculty of Science at the University of Zurich. The highly competitive salary follows Swiss National Science Foundation guidelines.
Place of work
Steinwiesstrasse 75, Zürich, Switzerland
Start of employment
The position will be available from August 1st, 2022.
Applications will be considered until May 9th.
