100%, Zurich, fixed-term
The Optical Nanomaterial Laboratory in the Physics Department at ETH Zurich is looking for a PhD student in integrated quantum photonics.
Project background
Linear optical quantum computing is one of the leading technologies for implementing large-scale quantum information processing. Quantum information is encoded in the state of single photons, and entangled photonic cluster states are prepared using linear optical circuits and single-photon measurements. Based on nanofabricated waveguides, integrated photonic circuits provide a scalable approach to producing and encoding single photons on a stable, compact, and reconfigurable monolithic chip.
Job description
The PhD project aims to design, develop and characterize quantum photonic circuits in the emerging lithium niobate-on-insulator (LNOI) photonics platform. This will include developing nonlinear photon-pair sources, reconfigurable quantum circuits and correlated photon detection. The project will involve all steps in the quantum photonic chip development process, including analytic and numerical simulations, chip modelling and design, nanofabrication, and optical measurements. Nanofabrication will include cleanroom processes such as lithography, etching and electron microscopy. The optical characterization will include linear, nonlinear and quantum optical experiments and data analysis.
Your profile
You should be highly motivated and creative, should have a Master’s degree in physics, quantum engineering, electrical engineering, photonics or related fields, and be interested in working in an interdisciplinary environment at the interface of quantum information science, integrated photonics and nonlinear optics.
