PhD Student in computer vision and machine learning
The Data Science for Sciences group lead by Prof. Jan Dirk Wegner at the Institute of Computational Science is seeking applications for a Doctoral Candidate / Research Assistant starting in fall 2021.
Your responsibilities
The successful candidate will work on a project in cooperation with the NASA GEDI team and more international partners, aiming to develop a near-real-time approach to estimate biomass and biodiversity at high spatial resolution from remote sensing data. We will explore exciting technical concepts like Bayesian deep learning, graph convolutional neural networks, and weakly supervised learning to ultimately contribute to a better understanding of climate change and to preserve biodiversity.
Your profile
  • An excellent degree (M.Sc. or equivalent) in Computer Science, Machine Learning, or a related field (e.g. Electrical Engineering, Applied Mathematics)
  • Strong mathematical understanding
  • Much experience in in deep learning and programming, preferably in Python
  • Prior experience in computer vision, data analysis and machine learning is a must
  • Fluency in English is required (written and spoken)

What we offer
We offer an exciting and stimulating environment to study and work in. The University of Zurich has several internationally recognized research groups dedicated to data science, machine learning, remote sensing, biodiversity, and climate change. We also collaborate with several other institutions and companies in the fields of computer vision, machine learning and earth observation, in Switzerland and abroad. The candidate will be co-affiliated with the EcoVision Lab at ETH Zurich, which has many close ties with a wide range of ETH Zurich research groups.
