The Sea-City Interface research project seeks to hire two PhD students to join the team. As a PhD student at National University of Singapore, your research will focus on mitigating climate change on the sea-city fringes in rapidly urbanising cities in tropical Asia, with a focus on Singapore.

Project background

The Sea-City Interface research project forms part of the FCL Global research programme. The project focuses on three broad areas. First, it studies measures to mitigate climate change and reduce its effects through improved approaches to urban design, geological engineering, environmental science, and building biomimicry technology to capture, absorb, store and remove of CO2 from the atmosphere. Second, it also develops practical and scalable nature-based approaches to how cities in the tropical Asian region might mitigate the effects of rising seas through urban design and biophilic approaches for water-sensitive design. Finally, the research considers the economic aspects of the sea-city interface, focusing on how these zones can combine their historical manufacturing roles, with emerging hybrid developments for a creative economy supporting diverse industries and promoting liveability.

Job description

While being hired by the Singapore ETH Centre, as part of ETH Zurich, you will be a full-time PhD student at National University of Singapore, under the supervision of Assoc. Prof. Dr. Rudi Stouffs and Oscar Carracedo. Your research will focus on various urban scales, from the city scale to the district and neighbourhood scale and will include analysis, planning and design, focusing on scenario development and assessment to mitigate climate change on the sea-city fringes in rapidly urbanising cities in tropical Asia, with a focus on Singapore.

Your profile

You have at least a Master’s degree in architecture or closely related field from a reputable university and should be proficient in urban design and planning skills. Expertise in either Geographic Information Systems (GIS) or computer parametric design/planning, simulation, urban prototyping, programming, scripting or data analytics is required. Competence in both GIS and programming would be desirable. Research experience is preferred but not required.
