PhD Position

Updated: about 2 months ago
Job Type: PartTime
Deadline: 05 Jul 2020

The Department of Philosophy at the University of Zurich is a globally networked, vibrant community of junior and advanced researchers with a focus on the theory of normativity. The Chair of General Ethics (Prof Dr Christoph Halbig) conducts research on metaethics and normative ethics, in particular general value theory and theory and ethics of the virtues.

The Chair of General Ethics has a PhD position to be filled within the recently approved SNSF research project "Grounding Rights" . The project is devoted to the question of the relationship between two central elements of our moral self-understanding: rights and interests. On the one hand, it will be examined whether rights are necessarily grounded in aspects of people’s well-being, and if so, whether rights always protect the interests of the right-holder or can also serve the well-being of others. On the other hand, we are examining whether, conversely, it is part of our well-being that our rights are respected.
