PhD position on Hydroborate-Based All-Solid-State Batteries

Updated: about 2 years ago
Deadline: The position may have been removed or expired!

Empa’s Laboratory Materials for Energy Conversion focuses on materials and device innovation for sustainable energy conversion and storage technologies. We are offering a

To surpass state-of-the-art lithium-ion battery technology, the research project focuses on the development of hydroborate-based all-solid-state batteries using high-capacity cathodes. Your tasks involve the synthesis of hydroborate-based solid-state electrolytes, the investigation of their (electro-)chemical compatibility to high-capacity cathode active materials, the investigation of protective coatings, identification and mitigation of failure mechanisms, and establishing conditions for stable battery cycling, aiming at improved energy and power density and prolonged cycle life.

You will design, conduct, and analyze scientific experiments autonomously in a dynamic interdisciplinary and collaborative research environment. In addition, you will be involved in writing scientific publications and presenting results at national and international scientific meetings. You will be encouraged to create intellectual property in the form of patents. The successful candidate will be enrolled in the PhD program at the Albert-Ludwigs-University in Freiburg, Germany.

Our labs are fully equipped for battery materials development and characterization. State-of-the-art facilities include synthesis labs with fume hoods, glove boxes, Schlenk lines, atmosphere-controllable furnaces and various synthesis reactors, high-energy ball mills, rotary evaporator, temperature-dependent viscosity, conductivity, and density analysis tools, thermal analysis tools (DSC-TG-MS, LFA), Raman and FT-IR spectrometers, X-ray diffractometers (including temperature-control functions and operando cells), etc. Battery testing facilities comprise battery assembly tools and electrochemical characterization devices including battery cyclers, impedance spectrometers, etc. Access to NMR, elemental analysis, advanced electron microscopy, and surface analysis tools is also available.

We are looking for a highly self-motivated team player ready to work in Empa’s vibrant international research environment starting from February 1st, 2022. The ideal candidate possesses a Master's degree in chemistry, materials science, or related fields. Prior experience in electro-chemistry and battery research is an advantage. Very good communication skills in English are required, German language skills are beneficial.
