PhD Position: OLED Device Physics & Modeling (# of pos: 2)

Updated: almost 2 years ago
Job Type: FullTime
Deadline: 15 Jul 2022

THE COMPANY

Fluxim provides device simulation software and measurement hardware to the display, lighting and photovoltaics community worldwide. Our principal activity is the development and the marketing of the simulation software, as well as measurement equipment for all-in-one electro-optical device characterization, the angular spectroscopy and for device stability assessment. Our R&D tools are used worldwide in industrial and academic research labs for the development of devices and semiconducting materials with improved performance as well as the study of device physics, respectively. These tools allow our customers to analyze, predict and improve device performance thereby reducing R&D cost and shortening time-to-market. Leading manufacturers rely on our tools for electro-optical simulation and characterization of stunning OLED displays.

YOUR MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES

To strengthen our R&D team we look for a physicist, engineer or computational scientist that carries out a PhD project in the framework of the Horizon Europe Doctoral Network project TADFSolutions with other European industrial and academic partners. The PhD student will investigate charge and exciton dynamics as well as optical properties of solution processed OLEDs with a special focus on device simulations.

The PhD project involves the following responsibilities:

  • Develop efficient ‘benchtop’ R&D methods and tools for the characterization of OLED materials and devices in the context of new class of solution-processable OLED emitter materials (Thermally activated delayed fluorescence, TADF)
  • Combine simulation and measurement methods for determination of material parameters, suggestions for device optimizations and prolonged operational lifetime
  • Development of prototype tools (simulation/characterization), testing and documentation
  • Collaborate closely with international project partners
  • International secondments on device fabrication and photophysical measurement
  • Write scientific publications and give presentations at technical conferences

PhD student 1 will investigate charge and exciton dynamics as well as optical properties of solution processed OLEDs with a special focus on device simulations. In particular, new models for thermal, optical and ionic transport in thin-film OLED devices will be developed and validated with experimental data in close collaboration with the other PhD students. Application of existing tools to gain understanding in efficiency and lifetime will complement the work.

PhD student 2 will focus on the analysis of microscopic degradation mechanisms and the acceleration factors due to temperature and current enhancements. By combining electro-optical characterization techniques (impedance spectroscopy, transient electroluminescence, etc.) and simulations, different hypothesis for device failure are scrutinized. Studying the temperature in the emissive devices and its dependence on layer inhomogeneities will provide input to colleagues working on fabrication of OLEDs.

QUALIFICATIONS

The ideal candidate has a university degree in Physics or Engineering at Master level and great interest in organic electronics, semiconductor physics or optics R&D either experimentally or by means of simulation. Prior research experience in one of our key application areas, OLEDs and emerging PV technology, as well as in numerical modeling are a plus. We look for a motivated scientist or engineer, that enjoys working in an international setting in a dynamic firm and contribute to this growing high-tech market. The candidate should be proficient in English. Applicants must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in Switzerland for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to the recruitment.

OUR OFFER

We offer an exciting PhD position in a challenging working environment in Winterthur, close to Zurich, Switzerland, in a young, highly motivated team. This position offers the opportunity to work in an industrial environment and actively contribute to future versions of the commercial simulation software Setfos and the measurement tool Litos. The position is embedded in an international project consortium that the PhD candidate will interact with. Further info about the TADFSolutions is will be provided at https://euraxess.ec.europa.eu/jobs/789087 .
