PhD position Lipid Mediators from Omega 3 Fatty Acids in Depression
100 %

Omega 3 fatty are involved in a plethora of physiological processes and there is evidence that lower intake of these essential fatty acids is inversely associated with depression in humans. However, the mechanism of their anti-depressive effect is not yet known. One possible mechanism is the metabolization of the omega 3 fatty acids to lipid mediators implicated in the resolution of inflammation. These so called specialized pro-resolution lipid mediators (SPM) are called resolvins, maresins and protectins and display potent anti-inflammatory properties. We have established a targeted lipidomic assay to measure key lipid mediators including SPMs and will investigate their role in a double blind placebo controlled intervention trial with omega 3 fatty acids in adolescents with depression.
Your responsibilities
This challenging project will involve:
  • the further development of an existing lipid mediator analytical method based on LC-MS/MS
  • the measurement of clinical samples from internal and external collaborators
  • bioinformatical analysis of the profile data
  • tight collaboration with different clinical partners

Your profile
The successful candidate will hold a Master's degree (or equivalent) in chemistry, pharmacy, or life science and be highly motivated to work on a challenging project. Experience in analytical chemistry is required and practical experience with LC-MS/MS is an advantage. Communication skills in oral and written English are essential. The successful candidate will be integrated into the PhD program of the Life Science Zurich Graduate School.
What we offer
Our division offers state-of-the-art technologies such as triple-quad mass spectrometers equipped with UPLC, high-resolution mass spectrometers, GC-MS/MS instruments, ion-chromatography HPLC as well as other standard equipment for molecular biology.
