Applications are invited for a PhD position in the Air Quality and Particle Technology group . The successful candidate will be hosted by the Institute of Environmental Engineering, ETH Zürich and will also work at Empa, (Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Testing and Research).

Position starting from Feb 2022 or upon agreement.


Job description

The research is to investigate the risks posed to human by airborne pollutants, which include airborne chemical substances and biological agents. Their synergistic effects and dose-response in effect-based systems will be studied to evaluate the health impact of exposure to these air pollutants. Even minute amounts of inhaled pollutants may cause adverse health impacts such as infectious dieses, allergic diseases, reactions to toxins or irritants. The specific tasks include

  • To monitor and characterize the ambient pathogens with established methods;
  • Toxicity tests for emerging pollutants and microbial infectious pathogens;
  • Determination of dose-response relationship for health risk assessment;
  • Investigation of the mechanisms for the health effects.

Your profile

We are looking for suitable candidates with a master level degree in microbiology, immunotoxicology, cell biology, or related fields with excellent grades. Good experimental capability is of high value. Good command of English is required.
