Empa - the place where innovation starts

Empa is the research institute for materials science and technology of the ETH Domain and conducts cutting-edge research for the benefit of industry and the well-being of society.

The nanotech@surfaces Laboratory is offering a

PhD position in the field of carbon-based quantum materials

We are looking for a highly motivated candidate with a strong experimental background in materials chemistry, solid state physics or nanoscience who wants to pursue cutting-edge research at a world-class level.

Within a large-scale project, we aim at developing carbon-based quantum materials for next-generation quantum technologies, with a strong focus on atomically precise graphene nanoribbons (GNRs). Within this project, you will work on the on-surface synthesis and characterization of GNRs with exotic properties (spin chains, topological quantum phases) that make them highly relevant for integration into quantum devices.

To preserve GNR properties upon substrate transfer and device integration, you will investigate specific GNR edge modifications such as hydrogen passivation as chemical and electronic protection steps. Within this context, you will also develop Raman spectroscopy methodologies to characterize the edge modifications and to benchmark the quality, robustness and reversibility of the passivation strategies.

The successful candidate will be integrated in the PhD Program of the Department of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering at ETH Zurich.

Required qualifications include a Master's degree in physics, chemistry, materials science, or equivalent, with a strong background in solid-state physics, physical chemistry or nanoscience. Prior experience with ultrahigh vacuum technology, Raman spectroscopy or scanning probe microscopy are advantageous but not strictly required. We are looking for a highly motivated team player who is motivated to learn and has excellent English communication skills.

Join our world-class team to explore carbon-based quantum systems within a global network of collaborators where you can build a competitive research portfolio. Located in the Zurich Area, the Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology (Empa) offers outstanding infrastructure, a broad interdisciplinary environment and competitive salaries. Empa is proud to be an equal opportunity employer, committed to creating an inclusive environment for all employees.

The position is available starting January 2023 or upon agreement, with a planned duration of three to four years.
