PhD position in the Distributed Computing Group

The Distributed Computing Group (www.disco.ethz.ch ) is a research group at ETH Zurich. We are interested in a variety of research topics on new and upcoming areas off the beaten paths. Our three main areas of research are machine learning, distributed systems, and theory of networks. Within these three areas, we are currently working on several projects: graph neural networks, natural language processing, algorithmic learning, fault-tolerance, blockchains, consensus, cryptocurrencies, digital money, central bank digital currency, decentralized finance, financial networks, e-democracy, voting, social networks, online analysis with delay, and theory of distributed algorithms.


Job description

In our group we try to apply and unite the approaches and techniques of theory and practice. Some members of our group focus on algorithms and mathematical proofs, some on system design and building. As a new member of the group, you are supposed to contribute to research activities in the group and gradually build your own independent research profile according to your interests. Successful candidates are expected to work towards a doctoral degree, and participate in the teaching activities of the group.

Your profile

We are looking for a new member with a strong academic background, and an excellent Master’s degree in Computer Science, Mathematics or a related field from a renowned university. A candidate should be attracted by and proficient in one or two of these areas: algorithm learning, approximation algorithms, blockchains, complexity theory, deep neural networks, distributed systems, graph theory, graph neural networks, learning theory, online algorithms, probabilistic algorithms, software engineering. A new group member can choose and shape a project according to their interests and talents within the first months of employment.
