The Seismology and Geodynamics group (SEG) and the Exploration and Environmental Geophysics (EEG) group (Institute of Geophysics, Department of Earth Sciences) have an immediate opening for an ambitious and talented PhD candidate in the field of signal processing of gravitational waves recordings.

Project background

The era of the gravitational waves (GW) astronomy has been initiated by the report of the collision of a pair of black holes by the Laser Interferometer Gravitational Observatory (LIGO) on September 14th, 2015. Currently, the European Space Agency (ESA) is implementing a new generation of space based GW observatories by the planned launching of the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) in the early 2030s. The design and the development of LISA have started in 2017, with key contributions from ETH Zurich to the instrument design. LISA will be an extraordinarily sensitive instrument and the problem of analyzing LISA recordings will encompass noise filtering and multiple simultaneous source separation challenges encountered in other disciplines such as the processing of seismological wavefield recordings.

Job description

The PhD student will explore the possibility of applying cutting-edge signal processing techniques used in various fields of science such as in seismology to the analysis of GW recordings. This project is a unique opportunity to work across a number of disciplines, and create a bridge between the scientific communities of gravitational waves astrophysics, applied mathematics and geophysics.

The PhD student will work in an interdisciplinary team together with leading researchers in the fields of signal processing, applied mathematics, geophysical data analysis, and gravitational waves physics from the ETH SEG and EEG groups, and experts in General Relativity and Gravitational Wave Astronomy from the University of Zurich and the University Paris Diderot (France).

Your profile

The successful candidate for this PhD project has outstanding capabilities in applied mathematics and signal processing. The candidate should hold a Master’s degree in physics, geophysics, applied mathematics, or similar fields, and should have a keen interest in inversion problem theory and physics. Good knowledge of English is essential.
