PhD Position in Organic Chemistry (# of pos: 2)

Updated: 2 months ago
Job Type: FullTime
Deadline: 01 Nov 2020

Hey, you! Yes, you! Wanna do some organic chemistry? We have a PhD position open. Our interdisciplinary research strives to expand the boundaries of applied photochemistry and combines organic chemistry, photochemistry and biology. We aim to re-engineer transition-metal-free organic dyes into photoreleasing systems which are actuated by near-infrared (NIR) light. Our goal is to develop tools for simultaneous delivery of multiple therapeutic agents as well as for the control of biological processes. The research is fully funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF).

In this project, you will design and synthesize photoactive organic molecules which absorb light in the NIR region, characterize them using analytical techniques, and explore their photochemical properties and behavior in aqueous media.

A highly motivated, creative, responsible and ambitious candidate with critical thinking and attention to detail. A friendly team player capable of scoring in the overtime when the team needs it the most. You have:

  • MSc degree (or equivalent) in organic chemistry (or going to finish soon)
  • Strong background in organic synthesis, including work at both small and large scale, and under oxygen- and moisture-free conditions
  • Ability to design, plan and carry out multistep synthetic sequences
  • Experience with analytical techniques (NMR, UV/vis, HPLC, GCMS etc.)
  • Experience with software including MS Office, ChemOffice, Mestrenova, Origin
  • Excellent written and oral English skills

  • Embarking on an expedition into the realm of photochemistry in the near-infrared territory
  • Full-time contract for 4 years, fully funded by SNSF (~50k CHF p.a.)
  • State-of-the-art research infrastructure
  • International conferences, training and mentoring

Applications should be sent directly to Dr. Peter Štacko by e-mail as a single PDF file. The file must include a cover letter expressing your motivation for the position, CV (resumé) containing the names and contact details of 2 referees, and summary of the past research experience.
