The Geobiology Group of the Department of Earth Sciences studies the co-​evolution of life and Earth using methods inspired by systems biology, phylogenetics, and data science and is offering a PhD position in Geobiology and Microbiology of Extreme Environments. 


Job description

The PhD project will investigate how seismic activity and oxidative stress affect subsurface microbial and viral communities. For this position you have a strong background in either geobiology, environmental microbiology and/or computational biology (or related subjects) and are interested in microbial evolution and extreme environments. This project includes experimental and computational components including microbial enrichment experiments, underground field experiments at the Bedretto Underground Lab's Deep Life Observatory and metagenomic/metatranscriptomic/metaproteomic analysis.

Salary and general working conditions will be consistent with ETH standards .


Your profile

You should:

  • Have a strong research interest in geobiology, microbiology and data science
  • Have experience with a programming language (e.g. python, R) is required
  • Have experience with either metagenomic analysis or experimental microbiology is desired
  • Hold a MSc degree in a related field
  • Be fluent in English
