The Laboratory for Mechanics of Materials and Nanostructures  is looking for a

PhD Position in Engineering of metal-polymer interfaces via atomic and molecular layer deposition for flexible applications

The topic: Thin films on polymers are omnipresent, from crisp packets to flexible electronics and satellite insulation. Yet restrictions in well-adhering coating-substrate combinations hinder the development of implantable medical devices, whilst crucial high-tech devices suffer from cracking and delamination, and non-recyclable large volume applications add to the growing threat of plastic pollution. Fundamentally, the metal-polymer interface complexly governs a materials' ability to prevent cracking and remain functional when bent or stretched in use – and also offers widely unexplored mechanisms to tackle sustainability issues caused by the inseparability of metallization and substrate. This project follows an experimental approach, supported by theoretical calculations in specific aspects, to achieve a breakthrough in understanding and tailoring of interlinked interfacial-mechanical properties. The experimental approach comprises the purposeful modification of metal-polymer interfaces via artificial interlayers using a novel combined atomic/molecular layer and physical vapor deposition process. The resulting interfacial and mechanical properties will be studied as a function of interlayer thickness and chemistries, aiming at adhesion promotion without embrittlement and the potential to trigger delamination in post-application conditions.

Your Tasks include:

  • Conducting atomic and molecular layer deposition (ALD/MLD) experiments combined with physical vapour deposition (PVD, sputtering) on a combined ALD/PVD deposition setup
  • Process & deposit characterization: AFM, SEM, TEM, Raman, EDX, FIB, XPS
  • Characterization of interfacial and electro-mechanical properties using elaborate in-situ test setups (tensile test, bulge test, in-situ-AFM,-SEM,-XRD with Synchrotron radiation)
  • Publishing results in scientific journals and presenting at conferences

Your Profile:

We are looking for a student with excellent skills in experimental work and a very good understanding of simulation theory. You must have a Master´s Degree preferably in Materials Science and Engineering, Physics or Chemistry from an internationally recognized institution. Highly motivated students are strongly encouraged to apply. Candidates must have the ability to think creatively, to progress work autonomously and to filter essential scientific content from experiments. She or he must be a team player, have an excellent knowledge of the English language and excellent communication skills in general.

Job Offer Details:
