Updated: about 1 year ago
Job Type: Permanent
Deadline: The position may have been removed or expired!

100%, Zurich, fixed-term

ETH Zurich is one of the world’s leading universities specializing in science and technology. At the Institute of Agricultural Science, the Animal Physiology Group addresses challenges in the study of embryomaternal communication and the application of assisted reproductive technologies (ART) in livestock and wildlife.

Project background

Assisted reproductive technologies usage in pigs is still underdeveloped due to the challenging female anatomy of the reproductive tract and compromised embryo survival rates. The current practices are lacking practical and non-laborious methods for producing piglets using ART. This project aims to develop a feasible embryo production (EP) scheme in pigs that allow the use of sows of high genetic merit.

Job description

The study partially funded by Federal Agency for Agriculture (Bundesamt für Landwirtschaft, BLW) comprises a cooperation approach between ETH Zurich, SUISAG (Swiss pig farming industry) and Minitube (a world-wide leading supplier of systems for the field of assisted animal reproduction) in which we will develop an automatable warming system for vitrified embryos as well as a non-surgical ET procedure performed at the site of the recipient female on-farm.

Your profile

You are an early experienced, highly motivated young researcher with a strong enthusiasm to conduct cutting-edge research in the interdisciplinary field of porcine ART. Furthermore, you have completed a master degree in agricultural sciences/veterinary sciences/molecular biotechnology medicine or a related discipline. Previous laboratory experience in cell and/or embryo culture is required. You have the ability to work independently in an interdisciplinary research environment. Very good knowledge of spoken and written English is essential.
