PhD in the field of cementitious construction materials

The topic of the 4 years project is studying novel methods to stabilize raw earthen building materials with low-embodied CO2 additives. The use of stabilized raw earth as a construction material is motivated by its low CO2 emissions compared to concrete. However, raw earth is commonly stabilized and strengthened with reactive calcium sources, typically lime or Portland cement that have high embodied CO2. Moreover, this strong chemical hydraulic stabilization hinders the re-use of raw earth and increases its en-vironmental footprint. This project aims to develop alternative methods for durable stabilization of raw earthen materials that have low environmental footprint and at the same time allow reuse of the raw earth.
