The English Department of the University of Zurich invites applications for a PhD Assistant in the field of English historical linguistics to start on 1 February 2023 at the Chair for English Historical Linguistics (Prof. Olga Timofeeva). This postgraduate position is initially limited to three years, with the possibility of extension for a further three years. The position is open to candidates with a completed MA who are aiming for a PhD.
Your responsibilities
Individual work on a PhD project as well as other research activities (conferences, publications, applications for external funding), independent teaching (two hours per week at BA level, starting out with the History of the English Language course) and administrative tasks at departmental level.
Your profile
We are looking for a member of staff with an outstanding MA thesis in the field of English historical linguistics. You have excellent knowledge of Old and Middle English and are interested in historical lexis and semantics and language contact. You are keen on collaborative work in an interdisciplinary project. You are proficient in verbal, written, and interpersonal communication in English and have a competence in German or are eager to acquire a working knowledge of German in the first two years.

We offer an assistant/PhD position with a workload of 60% (initially limited to a three-year
period, with possible extension for up to 3 three years, salary according to canton
regulations) in an internationally renowned, committed and collegial research team, which will support you in your independent research. The English Department offers an attractive, cooperative work environment with good infrastructure in an international, stimulating environment in central Zurich with full access to linguistic corpora, library services, IT facilities. You will be allocated a workspace in the department; the university's regulations allow staff to work from home for up to 40% of their weekly employment time.
