Offer Description

The Department of Chemistry - Ångström conducts research and education in the chemistry field. The department has more than 270 employees and has a turnover of 290 million SEK. At the department's six programs, we conduct very successful research of a high international standard. We have a large number of externally funded research projects, often with international cooperation and we see continued good growth in our subject area. The department has education assignments in engineering programs and master's programs. More information is available on our website .

We are now looking for two PhD students to join the research program of Structural chemistry and the Ångström Advanced Battery Centre with a focus on polymers and batteries. The Ångström Advanced Battery Centre is a research environment where about 100 researchers together work towards research and development for the batteries of the future.

Duties
The main duties of doctoral students are to devote themselves to their research studies which includes participating in research projects mentioned above and third cycle courses, thereby becoming experienced in topics like polymer chemistry, electrochemistry, battery assembly and characterization techniques. The work duties can also include teaching and other departmental duties (no more than 20%).

The first research project will focus on the development of functional polymers to solve remaining challenges in high energy density lithium-ion batteries. An important aspect of the project will be to understand the interaction between the polymers and the active materials in the batteries, such as silicon and high voltage cathodes. The project will be part of ongoing activities developing “intelligent” materials.

The aim of the second research project is to get a better understanding of ion transport mechanisms in polymers which is important for the development of polymer electrolytes for, e.g., solid-state batteries. How is the ion transport dependent on interactions between the polymeric solvent and the ions? What happens with the ion transport at the interface between two different polymers? These are examples of questions that this project will aim to address, and the answers will be utilized to practically demonstrate the investigated principles in functional electrochemical cells.

Requirements
The candidate must have:

  • been awarded a second-cycle qualification in chemistry, materials science or similar
  • satisfied the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits of which at least 60 credits were awarded in the second cycle, or
  • acquired essentially equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad.
  • very good oral and written proficiency in English.

Consideration will also be given to good collaborative skills, curosity, drive and independence, and how the applicant’s experience and skills complement and strengthen ongoing research within the department, and how they stand to contribute to its future development.

Additional qualifications

  • Knowledge in electrochemistry is highly meriting
  • Practical experience with characterization techniques relevant for polymeric materials and batteries is also meriting

About the employment
The employment is a temporary position according to the Higher Education Ordinance chapter 5 § 7. Scope of employment 100 %.Starting date 01-09-2024 or as agreed. Placement: Uppsala
