The Department of Neurobiology, Care Sciences and Society (NVS) conducts world leading research in aging, dementia, epidemiology and care sciences. This research extends from basic molecular and cell levels to clinical research and societal studies. NVS educates almost a third of KI students at basic and advanced levels. The Department has approximately 520 employees and a revenue 2022 of 518 million SEK. It comprises seven divisions, located at Campus Flemingsberg and Campus Solna.
The Division of Neurogeriatrics consists of about 65 employees. The division conducts experimental and translational research related primarily to Alzheimer's disease and other neurodegenerative diseases, but also more general molecular mechanisms with biomedical relevance are studied. The division is mainly located in BioClinicum, KI Campus Solna, and partially in Neo, KI Campus Flemingsberg.

Division
The position is in the lab of Per Nilsson and focuses on preclinical research on Alzheimer’s disease with a focus on protein homeostasis and autophagy. We use mouse models exhibiting Alzheimer pathologies to understand disease mechanisms and to test potential compounds in preclinical trials. Our studies build upon in vitro and in vivo models as well as on analysis of human clinical samples, in order to elucidate the molecular and cellular mechanisms of autophagy’s role in Alzheimer’s. In this project we are specifically aiming at targeting autophagy for a potential treatment of Alzheimer’s for which new mouse models will be developed.
Duties
A postdoctoral position is now open in a “brain clearance” project devoted to exploring the potential of autophagy in ameliorating Alzheimer’s disease pathologies in close collaboration with Assoc Prof Iben Lundgaard’s lab at Lund University who is expert in the glymphatic clearance system. The postdoctoral fellow is expected to play a leading role in experimental design, experimentation, analysis, as well as presentation/publication of results.
Entry requirements
Scholarships for postdoctoral qualification can be established for foreign researchers who place their qualifications in Sweden. The purpose of scholarships for postdoctoral qualification is to promote internationalization and contribute to research qualification after a doctorate or equivalent.
A scholarship for carrying out postdoctoral research can be granted for a maximum of two years within a four year period following the receipt of a doctoral degree or equivalent.
To be eligible for a postdoctoral scholarship, the person must have obtained a doctorate or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a doctorate. Applicants who have not completed a doctorate at the end of the application period may also apply, provided that all requirements for a completed degree are met before the (intended) start date of the post doctoral education.
The head of the department determines whether their previous training and scholarly qualifications correspond to a Swedish doctorate or higher.
The applicant should be a highly motivated individual who can collaborate and function well in a team. We are looking for a person who holds a PhD and has an interest in neuroscience, and with skills preferably in more than one of the following areas: stereotactic injections, animal behavior, immunohistochemical and biochemical analysis of brain and primary cultures.
Previous experience of mouse animal work including treatments and behavioral assessments is required, including appropriate certificate for mouse animal work (FELASA C or equivalent).
Excellent English oral and writing skills is a requirement.
Location: Solna
Type of scholarship
The amount is tax free and it is set for twelve months at a time, paid out on a six months basis. In exceptional cases, shorter periods may be acceptable.
Application process
An application must contain the following documents in English or Swedish:
- A complete curriculum vitae, including date of the thesis defence, title of the thesis, previous academic positions, academic title, current position, academic distinctions, and committee work
- A complete list of publications
- A summary of current work (no more than one page)
The application is to be submitted on the Varbi recruitment system.
We may start interviews during the application period.
