Postdoctoral position in Quantum materials

Updated: over 2 years ago
Job Type: FullTime
Deadline: 31 Dec 2021

Information about the research

In general, quantum materials display a delicate interplay of several interactions (charge, spin, orbital, and lattice) on the atomic-scale. The focus of this post-doctoral project is based on the investigation of magnetic and electronic properties of quantum materials using neutron and X-ray scattering/spectroscopy techniques. In particular, the project will focus on the studies of superconducting and magnetic van der Waals materials, using a combination of home lab equipment as well as large-scale infrastructure.

The research at the Division of Materials Physics  at the Department of Physics focuses on the studies of the fundamental properties of materials ranging from soft to hard hierarchical materials, liquids and glasses, complex oxides, and quantum matter. Our research aims to understand the relationships between the microscopic interactions and the macroscopic functions of the materials to develop and optimize the next generations of materials that could be implemented in future technological devices. Various experiments are conducted in our home laboratories, but also at large-scale facilities all over the world. The group has excellent expertise in X-ray and neutron scattering/spectroscopy techniques and is involved in the new instrumental developments that Sweden is implementing with the MAX IV and European Spallation Source (ESS) facilities. Over many years we have also developed a strong and fruitful collaboration with theoreticians, both locally and internationally. At present, the division comprises five faculty members, two assistant professors, fourteen Ph.D. students, seven postdocs, and one technician. We strive to provide a stimulating, motivating, and collaborative research environment.

Major responsibilities
The major part of your time will be devoted to your post-doctoral research project, where you will be expected to plan, perform and disseminate the work in larger and small collaborative constellations. Another important aspect involves collaboration within international research groups and with society at large. The position may also include supervision of students on undergraduate and master's levels. The position is meritorious for future research duties within academia as well as industry/the public sector.

Contract terms
Full-time temporary employment. The position is limited to a maximum of two years (1+1).

Qualifications
To qualify for the position of postdoc, you must have a doctoral degree in Physics. You need experience in working with 1D, 2D and 3D correlated systems like hollandites, van der Waals and double perovskite materials, using a combination of muon spin rotation, inelastic X-ray scattering, and neutron scattering techniques. Very good communication and collaborative skills are required, including excellent oral and written reporting in English. Swedish is not a requirement but Chalmers offers Swedish courses.
