Uppsala University is a comprehensive research-intensive university with a strong international standing. Our ultimate goal is to conduct education and research of the highest quality and relevance to make a long-term difference in society. Our most important assets are all the individuals whose curiosity and dedication make Uppsala University one of Sweden’s most exciting workplaces. Uppsala University has over 45,000 students, more than 7,000 employees and a turnover of around SEK 7 billion.

Department of Chemistry – BMC conducts research and education in analytical chemistry, biochemistry and organic chemistry. More than 100 people work at the department. New employees and students are recruited from all over the world and English is the main working language. The department is located at the Biomedical Centre in Uppsala, which facilitates collaborations with research groups in biology, pharmacy, medicine and SciLifeLab and gives access to advanced infrastructure for experimental and theoretical studies. Project description
A two-year postdoctoral position is open in Erik Marklund’s research group at the Department of Chemistry – BMC, Biochemistry research programme. The Marklund group carries our investigations in computational chemistry, biology and biophysics in order to understand the structural dynamics of proteins and protein complexes. The research also includes development of new physical methods for the manipulation of proteins, often with the purpose of facilitating their imaging with structural biology methods. More information about the Marklund group’s research is available on the group homepage .

The overarching research project that the position is part of strives to combine native mass spectrometry with small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) for the imaging of macromolecular complexes, and to apply the method to the structures of virus particles.

Duties
The work involves the modelling of protein complexes and their dynamics in strong electric fields, and their stabilities in vacuum under electrospray conditions. In addition, new theory and suitable computational tools for SAXS of field-oriented proteins will be developed. The work also encompasses close collaboration and coordination with the rest of the project members, and also  supervising project students.

Requirements
PTo qualify for an employment as a postdoctor you must have a PhD degree or a foreign degree equivalent to a PhD degree in biochemistry, chemistry, physics, or biology with a specialization suitable for the project. The degree needs to be obtained by the time of the decision of employment. Those who have obtained a PhD degree three years prior to the application deadline are primarily considered for the employment. The starting point of the three-year frame period is the application deadline. Due to special circumstances, the degree may have been obtained earlier. The three-year period can be extended due to circumstances such as sick leave, parental leave, duties in labour unions, etc.

The position demands that you have solid experience in molecular simulation methods and good knowledge about X-ray diffraction, proteins in vacuum, and the interaction between molecules and electric fields. Since the position is attached to an international research project where cooperation is key, we attach great importance to personal qualities, in particular good collaborative abilities, motivation, and independence. Candidates must be able to express themselves very well in spoken as well as written English.

Additional qualifications
Knowledge about electrospray ionisation, native mass spectrometry, and free-electron lasers is highly desirarble. Experience in supervising project students is considered an advantage.

About the employment
The employment is a two-year temporary position according to central collective agreement. Scope of employment 100 %. Starting date as agreed. Placement: Uppsala.
