PostDoc position in UV/vis- and fluorescence spectroscopy/microscopy

Updated: 27 days ago
Deadline: 20 May 2021

Project description
Andréasson research group at the Division of Chemistry and Biochemistry now invites applications for a PostDoc position (2-year position, full time research scholarship) in the field of UV/vis- and fluorescence spectroscopy/microscopy. The main research objectives for the PostDoc will be the functional characterization/validation of novel photochromic compounds using UV-vis/fluorescence spectroscopy and multiphoton microscopy. The daily work will be performed at Chalmers University of Technology, in close collaboration with the Department of Chemistry & Molecular Biology at University of Gothenburg, conveniently located in the same building.

The division and the research group
The secret life of molecules is the main theme of our research and teaching at the Division of Chemistry and Biochemistry. We are studying how small and large molecules can be produced, their interaction with one another in material or in living cells, and how they can capture and convert energy. The projects are chosen to fulfill the requirements of the highest scientific standard, and the know-how they create on a molecular level is generally of importance for solving many advanced problems as well as for future practical applications. The span of potential applications is extremely wide: from life sciences to materials sciences.

Andréasson research group is focusing on the synthesis and spectroscopic characterization of molecular photoswitches (photochromic molecules). Today, the main focus is on how to gain photonic control of energy transfer (FRET) reactions in these systems, which in turn will change the fluorescent properties. We use this scheme for many different applications, and the successful candidate will partake in a project aiming at boosting the performance in fluorescence microscopy by cleverly designed photochromic constructs.

Major responsibilities
Your major responsibility as postdoc is to perform your own research in a research group. More specifically, the main tasks will be to assist in the design and to perform the spectroscopy/microscopy validation of the target compounds. UV/vis- and fluorescence spectroscopy together with multiphoton microscopy will be the major experimental techniques. The position could also include supervising master's and/or PhD students to a certain extent.

Contract terms
Full time research scholarship. The position is limited to a maximum of two years (1+1).

Qualifications
The applicant for this PostDoc position should have a PhD degree in physical chemistry, biochemistry, biophysical chemistry, or an equivalent education. The degree should generally not be older than three years.

Mandatory experience and skills:
-UV/vis- and fluorescence spectroscopy (steady-state and time-resolved techniques)
-Multiphoton microscopy
-Ability to communicate efficiently in written and spoken English.

Meritorious experience and skills:
-Experience in working with photochromic compounds.
-Experience in studying energy transfer (FRET) reactions.
-Experience in working with living cells.
-Previous PostDoc experience.

Chalmers continuously strives to be an attractive employer. Equality and diversity are substantial foundations in all activities at Chalmers.
