We are looking for PhD student in medical science, within magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) on liver and whole body for diagnosing a range of liver diseases.

Your work assignments
The use of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) on liver and whole body for diagnosing a range of liver diseases, from diffuse liver disease (fat storage and inflammation) to cirrhosis and liver cancer, is increasing very rapidly. Usually, conventional clinical use of such diagnostic MR-images and data is typically limited to visual assessments of the anatomy. This research project instead has a main focus on tissue function and metabolism. Your tasks thus involve the development of advanced methods that make it possible to analyze new types of multimodal MRI data.

You will work both practically and theoretically with magnetic resonance physics to identify imaging- and spectroscopy-based biomarkers that are important for liver tissue function. You will collect MR-data from patients, and phantoms, but also work with advanced data analysis.

You will need to independently develop both existing MR-data processing methods and to implement new. You will do this in close collaboration with researchers from other professions.

You will be part of the MR-physics research group and need to have a continuous dialogue and collaboration with other fellow students and researchers. You will be an active participant in the graduate school at the Center for Medical Image Processing and Visualization (CMIV, www.liu.se/cmiv), but also the ’Strategic Research Areas’ in Cancer and Circulation and Metabolism, respectively, at the Medical Faculty, and beyond.

During the postgraduate education you will gain both general theoretical and practical skills on how to conduct medical / physical research, and what ethical and research considerations need to be made.

As a doctoral student, you devote most of your time to doctoral studies and the research projects of which you are part. Your work may also include teaching or other departmental duties, up to a maximum of 20% of full-time.

Your workplace
You will work in the MR-physics group, within the department of Radiological Sciences, Linköping University and CMIV, and the education is full-time, 100%.

The research group conducts research and postgraduate education in MR-physics and radiological applications thereof. CMIV is an interdisciplinary research center within Linköping University that conducts focused front-line research in interdisciplinary projects that provide solutions to tomorrow's clinical issues. The interdisciplinary MR-research group within CMIV, conducts both technical development, implementation and application of advanced MR methods. The research group has access to three research MR-scanners (in addition to several clinical scanners) and also the national 7 T scanner.

Your qualifications
You have completed a degree at the advanced level in medical technology, technical biology, hospital physics, or equivalent, corresponding to at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits at the advanced level, or equivalent if you have a corresponding degree from elsewhere. You have an engineering background (e.g., medical physics, image processing or scientific calculation), or a background in hospital physics (with practical experience of MR), or equivalent.

Experience of research support and medical image data (DICOM etc), magnetic resonance physics, hands-on use of MR-scanner, programming, AI and machine learning, reconstruction, systems biology, modeling, Matlab, Python, docker, co-labs, etc and system management of unix / linux are meritorious.

Good language skills are necessary, i.e., you excel in formulating yourself, in both speech and writing in English and will be able to make you understood in Swedish / Scandinavian. Experience of scientific writing is an advantage. European citizenship may be an advantage. We attach great importance to personal suitability.

Terms of employment
In connection with your admission to the doctoral program, your employment as a doctoral student is handled. More information about the doctoral studies at each faculty is available at Doctoral studies at Linköping University

The employment has a duration of four years’ full-time equivalent. You will initially be employed for a period of one year. The employment will subsequently be renewed for periods of maximum duration two years, depending on your progress through the study plan. The employment may be extended up to a maximum of five years, based on the amount of teaching and departmental duties you have carried out. Further extensions can be granted in special circumstances.

The salary of doctoral students is determined according to a locally negotiated salary progression.
