Phd student in Chemical Technology

Updated: over 2 years ago
Deadline: 31 Oct 2021

Luleå University of Technology experiences rapid growth with world-class expertise within several research domains. We shape the future through innovative education and groundbreaking research results, and drawing on our location in the Arctic region we create global societal benefit. Our research is carried out in close collaboration with companies such as LKAB, Ericsson, Boliden, ABB and Epiroc and with leading international universities. We also have a well-functioning collaboration with regional authorities, school authorities and other organisations in both our scientific and artistic research and education. Luleå University of Technology has an annual turnover of SEK 1.8 billion. Today, we have 1,770 staff and 17,200 students.

In the coming years, multi-billion investments will be made in large projects in the regions of Norrbotten and Västerbotten in Northern Sweden to create a fossil-free society. Luleå University of Technology is involved in several of these cutting-edge research projects and in the societal transformation that they entail. We offer a broad range of courses and study programmes to match the skills in demand.

The research in Chemical Technology is focused on zeolites with a clear environmental profile.  We are in the international research front within zeolite membranes and we also develop zeolite based catalysts and adsorbents. The materials we develop can be used for e.g. separation of carbon dioxide, for synthesis of renewable fuels, and to reduce the energy use in industry.  We cooperate with several multinational companies and we have also started a spin-off company. We have a top-class modern and well-equipped laboratory. We are now looking for a highly qualified PhD student that can strengthen the research group.

Description of research subject
Chemical Technology encompasses the design and analysis of industrial chemical processes and products through experimental and theoretical studies. Of particular importance is the development of materials for chemical engineering applications.

DUTIES
The duties are preparation of membranes, catalysts or adsorbents and characterization of these by advanced scientific instruments. The materials are also evaluated by tests in our laboratory and the properties are described by chemical engineering models. Depending on your preferences and the needs of the group, you will focus on one of, or a few of these tasks. As a PhD student, you usually contribute to our education and to the daily maintenance and operation of our equipment in the laboratory as a part of your departmental duties.

QUALIFICATIONS
Eligible candidates must have a bachelor or master degree of at least 180 ECTS, including at least 90 ECTS in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or Materials Engineering.

In addition, you have very good credentials and high analytical, problem-solving and social skills. You are highly motivated and can work independently and in a group. You can work both with practical and theoretical work and have very good oral and written communication skills. Practical skills and technical competence is highly qualifying.
