Antimicrobial resistance in zoonotic pathogens – a challenge for urban small holder livestock production system

We are searching for a highly motivated PhD-student interested in the research area biomedical sciences with focus on bacteriology and food safety. The aim of the project is to generate new knowledge contributing to reduced spread of antimicrobial resistant zoonotic bacteria in livestock production systems in low-income countries. The project focuses on urban poultry production in Uganda. Another aim is to reduce spread of food borne Campylobacter in urban poultry production.

The project will provide new data regarding Campylobacter and subspecies and sequence types present in urban poultry production in Uganda, and spread and diversity of antimicrobial resistant. We will also investigate drivers and knowledge concerning spread of zoonotic infections. The project will also generate new knowledge around antimicrobial usage in the urban poultry production.

Work within the project includes planning and conducting research studies such as, fieldwork in Uganda, bacteriological, molecular biological and epidemiological analyses, and publishing of scientific data. The bacteriological and molecular biological analyses include sampling, bacteriological culturing, and analyses of antimicrobial resistance and clonal diversity. The epidemiological analyses include risk factor analyses, knowledge and attitudes regarding spread of antimicrobial resistance and antibiotic usage. The project will be performed in close collaboration with the Makerere University, Kampala, Uganda.
