The Department of Animal nutrition and management (HUV) conducts basic and applied research on feed, the animals' metabolism and on housing and management. The goal is to create a sustainable and profitable production with good animal management that provides high quality food. HUV is responsible for undergraduate education, research and postgraduate education in the subject areas of nutritional physiology, feed science, management and aquaculture. HUV offers an inspiring research environment where we study metabolic processes, nutrient utilization and management in animals in different production systems.

Our research within ruminant nutrition primarily focuses on effects of feeding on metabolism, production and the environment but also includes effects of animal management on these factors. We study how grazing, and feeding strategies based on forage and by-products and different feed structures, affect animal welfare in conventional and organic herds. Furthermore we investigate how feeding influences the gastro-intestinal microbiota both in young and adult animals. In our research both the local and the global perspectives are important.


The environmental impact of dairy cows largely consists of the methane emissions from their digestion. Cows, like other ruminants, have a unique ability to convert fibrous feeds into milk and meat due to the microorganisms present in the rumen of the cows. However, the process by which the feed is digested also leads to the formation of methane. New studies have shown that bioactive substances in red algae (Asparogopsis spp.) can reduce methane formation in dairy cows. Within the framework of this project, we want to further develop these studies and investigate the effects of red algae when given to dairy cows fed with typical Nordic diets.

The PhD student will, with the support of the supervisor group, study how the addition of algae in the feed affects milk yield, health and metabolism parameters and also to investigate the environmental effects of the algae supplements. The PhD student will also analyse bioactive substances in red algae and their effects on the rumen microbial community and how they affect the formation of methane, hydrogen and volatile fatty acids. The tasks include work with experimental animals (dairy cows), sample preparation, laboratory work including culture-based and molecular methods. Furthermore, the tasks include statistically processing data and presenting the results orally and in writing. Part of the work will be performed at the Department of Agricultural Research for Northern Sweden (NJV), SLU Umeå. The project is carried out in collaboration with the Department of Molecular Sciences, NJV, KTH and Volta Greentech.


A university degree of at least 240 higher education credits is required. We are looking for a person who have a degree in Animal Science, Biology or similar. Good ability to communicate in both oral and written English is a requirement, as is good computer skills. Experience of laboratory work is required. Knowledge of anaerobic systems and molecular methods is an advantage. It is also an advantage to have experience of working with cows or large experimental animals and you should have a driving license (B). Furthermore, great emphasis is placed on personal suitability such as good collaboration skills and the ability to work independently.

A person has basic eligibility for third cycle education if he or she has taken a second cycle qualification or has completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, including at least 60 higher education credits at second cycle education. Upper secondary school grades equivalent to English B/English 6 are a basic requirement.
