Phd Candidate in Law with a focus on public international law and labour law with special emphasis on artificial intelligence

The Department of Law is one of the largest departments at Stockholm University with about 200 employees and 5,500 students. More than 100 teachers are engaged full time to teach and to carry out the research on which the teaching is founded. The Faculty employs above 30 professors in different areas. The department includes the Stockholm Centre for International Law and Justice (SCILJ) and the the Institute for Social Private Law.

Research area
The Department of Law announces a position as a doctoral candidate in Law with a focus on public international law and labour law with special emphasis on artificial intelligence. The position is part of the initiative "The Wallenberg Artificial Intelligence Autonomous Systems and Software Program - Humanities and Society (WASP-HS) PhD in Society.

The doctoral candidates education into research will be done as part of the research project ”The Global Governance of Artificial Intelligence”, conducted within the research programme WASP-HS, funded by Marianne and Marcus Wallenberg Foundation (MMW 2020-0044) and The Legal Bureau of the Swedish Trade Union Confederation (LO-TCO rättsskydd). The topic of the doctoral project should relate to the overarching aim of the research project to chart and explain the emergence of international regimes for the regulation of Artificial Intelligence, including its normative implications.

Qualification requirements
In order to meet the general entry requirements to doctoral studies, the applicant must have completed a second-cycle degree, completed courses equivalent to at least 240 higher education credits, of which 60 credits must be in the second cycle, or have otherwise acquired equivalent knowledge in Sweden or elsewhere.

In order to meet the specific entry requirements, the general syllabus for doctoral studies in the field of Law stipulates that applicants must have completed an LL.M, a Law Degree or equivalent. Eligibility can also be granted to applicants who, through professional experience or other training, are deemed to have acquired competence equal to that which is necessary to conduct studies at post-graduate level, both in terms of scientific skills and legal literacy relevant to the research area.   

Eligibility requires that the applicant has very good command of Swedish and good knowledge of English, or a very good command of English and good knowledge of Swedish.

The possibility of being selected as a doctoral candidate is largely based on the applicant´s deemed capability to carry out studies at a doctoral level.

The qualification requirements must be met by the deadline for applications.

Selection
The selection among the eligible candidates will be based on their deemed capacity to carry out studies at a doctoral level. This capability will be assessed based on the the following criteria, stipulated by the Faculty of Law:

• The applicants' general knowledge
• The project description
  – the originality of the project
  – the theoretical framework and the question at issue in relation to previous research
  – the legibility of the method and the relevance in relation to the question at issue
  – the addition of new knowledge and its relevance
• The viability of the project plan.

A requirement in order to be selected is that the doctoral project is within the application approved and funded by WASP-HS: ”Algorithms in the Workplace – The Adequacy of the Existing Legal Framework for Occupational Health and Safety, Non-discrimination, Data Protection and Worker’s Voice Arrangements” available at: Algorithms in the Workplace (N.B. pp. 4.-7). That means that the project description must include a doctoral project that focuses on one or several of the following aspects in relation to artificial intelligence: Occupational Health and Safety, Non-discrimination, Data Protection or Worker’s Voice Arrangements.

The following will be taken into account when assessing the competence of the applicant: the applicant´s documented subject knowledge and its relevance to the research; the ability to express oneself in speech and writing in Swedish and English; the capacity for analytical thinking; creativity; self-initiative and independece; interpersonal skills. Previous studies and grades will also be considered, as well as the quality of the individual work, references, relevant experience, interviews, the applicant´s written motivation for the request.

The applicant´s general competence will be assessed through academic performance, essays and other writings that show the ability for clear presentation and critical analysis, as well as professional experiences and other similar activities that are relevant to the education.

Terms of employment
The employment is expected to start January 2022 or according to agreement.

Only a person who will be or has already been admitted to a third-cycle programme may be appointed as a doctoral candidate. 

The employment is as an "industrial doctoral candidate”, i.e. the doctoral candidate will be employed by The Legal Bureau of the Swedish Trade Union Confederation (LO-TCO rättsskydd). The doctoral candidate will be enrolled and receive his or her doctoral degree at Stockholm University.

The term of the initial contract may not exceed one year. The employment may be extended for a maximum of two years at a time. However, the total period of employment may not exceed the equivalent of four years of full-time study.

Doctoral students should primarily devote themselves to their own education.
