PhD students in Social Anthropology with a focus on Asia
The Department of Social Anthropology at Stockholm University welcomes applications for two PhD positions focusing on Asia, meaning South, Southeast, and East Asia. We welcome applicants with a substantive interest in one or more countries in Asia. This may include projects located outside the region, for instance, focusing on issues such as Asian migration to the Middle East or Asian economic investment in Africa.

Incoming doctoral students will be part of a national research school in Asian studies , a collaboration between the Stockholm Center for Global Asia at Stockholm University, the Center for East and South-East Asian Studies at Lund University, and the Center for Asian Studies at the Stockholm School of Economics. Doctoral students will be able to take advantage of a large research network, cross-listed courses, workshops, and joint colloquia. The doctoral students will also be expected to participate in activities at the Stockholm Center for Global Asia .

The application deadline is March 24, 2023. There may be interviews with short-listed candidates. Final decisions will be made by early June and the starting date is August 28, 2023.

Qualification requirements
In order to meet the general entry requirements, the applicant must have completed a second-cycle degree, completed courses equivalent to at least 240 higher education credits, of which 60 credits must be in the second cycle, or have otherwise acquired equivalent knowledge in Sweden or elsewhere.

In order to meet the specific entry requirements, the general syllabus for doctoral studies in the field of Social Anthropology stipulates that applicants must have completed courses equivalent to at least 120 credits in Social Anthropology or a comparable subject, of which 60 credits must be in the second cycle. At least 15 credits in the second cycle must constitute a thesis project.

The qualification requirements must be met by the deadline for applications.

Selection
The selection among the eligible candidates will be based on their capacity to benefit from the training. The following criteria will be used to assess this capacity: 

  • Independent judgement and academic rigor displayed in previous research
  • Ability to formulate research questions
  • Ability to work within a given time frame
  • Methodological and scientific maturity
  • Ability to analyse material critically
  • Ability to structure one’s material using anthropological concepts and methods
  • Ability to conduct an analysis in an original and scientific manner (where originality lies in the analysis rather than the material);
  • Ability to carry out ethnographic methods and reflections
  • Ability to cooperate and communicate with others.

Terms of employment
Only a person who will be or has already been admitted to a third-cycle programme may be appointed to a doctoral studentship.

The term of the initial contract may not exceed one year. The employment may be extended for a maximum of two years at a time. However, the total period of employment may not exceed the equivalent of four years of full-time study. The starting salary is currently 28 000 SEK per month.

Doctoral students should primarily devote themselves to their own education, but may engage in teaching, research, and administration corresponding to a maximum of 20 % of a full-time position.
