PhD student position in THz and Microwave electronics

Updated: about 1 month ago
Deadline: 18 Apr 2024

Information about the research group
The Group for Advanced Receiver Development (GARD) carries research in the field of Terahertz technology. GARD research activities include elements of low-temperature physics, superconducting electronics, material science, terahertz technology and thin-film technology. This research has main applications in instrumentation for radio astronomy and environmental sciences. Being internationally recognized with its state-of-art Terahertz instrumentation, GARD was and is participating in major large-scale international projects, such as Herschel HIFI, ALMA and APEX.

As a PhD student with us at GARD, you will be involved in technological development aiming to achieve ultra-wideband RF and IF performance components for next generation receivers for APEX, ALMA (though the Wideband Sensitivity Upgrade program), and EHT, partially within the European project RADIOBLOCKS , involving about 30 different research insitutes developing state-of-the-art technology for future radio astronomy instrumentation.

Major responsibilities
The prospective PhD student is expected to:

- Design and measure advanced wideband waveguide structures at THz frequencies

- Design, realize and measure integrated (MMIC-like) THz mixers operating at cryogenic temperatures for wideband operations

- Analyze the findings and perform simulations, formulate conclusions, present and publish the results.

The major responsibilities are to pursue your own doctoral studies. As a PhD student, you are expected to develop your own scientific concepts and communicate the results of your research verbally and in writing, both in Swedish and in English. The position generally also includes teaching on Chalmers' undergraduate level or performing other duties corresponding to 20 per cent of the employed time.
