PhD student position in mechanical engineering with focus on model-driven product development

The Department of Mechanical Engineering is one of seven departments at the Faculty of Engineering. The department is a vital part of BTH and has been so ever since its start in 1989. Our work is focused on activities that build competence for a modern digital product development that support companies' transitions towards a sustainable society. In research and education, we work in a broad spectrum. From basic mechanical engineering via modelling and simulation towards innovative product-service system development. The research area has mechanical engineering as scientific foundation and drive product development capability for innovation in a sustainable society as a comprehensive focus. 

Work description:

The PhD student will conduct the research within the research subject area of Mechanical Engineering with focus on model-driven product development. The student will have an individual study plan in Mechanical Engineering, which details a research, study and teaching plan. Rules and benefits for PhD students in Sweden apply to this position. Teaching at basic and advanced level in Mechanical Engineering is also part of the position (up to 20% of full time).

About the research focus:

Achieving an efficient and innovative product development process to support companies and organisations in their competitiveness is a key area in this research. Methods, tools and approaches to support organizations product develpment and R&D via the use of a model- and simulation-driven approach to engineering design is the core focus of this position. The research is done in close collaboration with industry on national and international level, with applications in transportation and manufacturing industry. Specifically, this position will deal with supporting the development of a model-driven decision support arena to aid the development of decision support for product-service systems design.

The PhD student will be associated with ongoing research projects at the Mechanical Engineering department and related teaching.

Eligibility requirements:

For admission to doctoral employment, it is required that the applicant is or will be admitted to postgraduate education. Eligible for admission to postgraduate education is those who have completed a degree at the advanced level, completed course requirements of at
least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits at advanced level, or at in any other way within or outside the country acquired substantially corresponding knowledge (Chapter 7, Section 39 in the Higher Education Ordinance (1993:
100)). The current position applies to the first part of the doctoral program (i.e. to the licentiate degree).

Meriting competencies and experience:

Potential candidates for the position should have the following qualifications and skills:

  • Hold a Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent subject.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in English (reading, writing, speaking).
  • Show ability to work independently as well as in a team.
  • Experience in project work within product development and/or product-service systems design.
  • Good knowledge in computer aided engineering or model-driven development.
  • Ability to communicate in Swedish.

Commencement: March 1, 2022, or as agreed upon.

Employment level: 100%

Duration: 2.5 years, i.e. the first half of the expected five years Phd duration (admission to the second half will be granted based on
general BTH requirements, i.e. based on performance, e.g. successful completion of the Licentiate, and availability of funds)

Salary: For PhD students at BTH a standard salary scale is applied, which means that the salary is adjusted upwards as the student progresses through the program.
