PhD student position in mathematical optimization and artificial intelligence

Updated: about 2 years ago
Deadline: 25 Feb 2022

We are looking for a PhD candidate to the largest department of mathematical sciences in Sweden. The specialization will be towards optimization, and in particular optimal transport, with a possibility to direct it towards areas such as machine learning, stochastic processes, signal processing, inverse problems, and/or control theory. The environment at the department is international and dynamic, and the candidate will also take part in the national WASP graduate school.

Information about the department, division and the project
The Department of Mathematical Sciences at Chalmers University of Technology and the University of Gothenburg has about 200 employees, and is the largest department of mathematical sciences in Sweden. We deliver undergraduate and graduate courses for a diverse set of engineering and science programs at both universities, including two Master programs in mathematics. The department is comprised of three academic divisions: Algebra and Geometry; Analysis and Probability; Applied Mathematics and Statistics. More information about us can be found on our website: http://www.chalmers.se/math/

The Division of Applied Mathematics and Statistics conducts internationally recognized research in areas such biomathematics, mathematical optimization, finite element methods, inverse problems, stochastic partial differential equations, mathematical statistics, and data science. The division is also rapidly expanding in the area of Machine learning and Artificial Intelligence https://www.chalmers.se/en/departments/math/research/research-groups/AIMS/Pages/default.aspx

We are looking for one doctoral student, positioned at Chalmers, for the project "Structured multi-marginal optimal transport and applications". The position is financed by the "Wallenberg AI, Autonomous Systems and Software Program" (see below), and the project will develop theory and methods for this type of optimal transport problems: developing efficient solution methods for a class of strucutred problems; connecting it to stochastic differential equations; and exploring its use in machine learning. More information about the project can be found here: https://chalmersuniversity.box.com/s/apmlsr6iomgj8r4brxk9ux28r2p9sjl4

Wallenberg AI, Autonomous Systems and Software Program (WASP) is Sweden’s largest individual research program ever, a major national initiative for strategically motivated basic research, education and faculty recruitment. The program addresses research on artificial intelligence and autonomous systems acting in collaboration with humans, adapting to their environment through sensors, information and knowledge, and forming intelligent systems-of-systems.

The vision of WASP is excellent research and competence in artificial intelligence, autonomous systems and software for the benefit of Swedish industry. Read more: https://wasp-sweden.org/

The graduate school within WASP is dedicated to provide the skills needed to analyze, develop, and contribute to the interdisciplinary area of artificial intelligence, autonomous systems and software. Through an ambitious program with research visits, partner universities, and visiting lecturers, the graduate school actively supports forming a strong multi-disciplinary and international professional network between PhD-students, researchers and industry. Read more: https://wasp-sweden.org/graduate-school/

Major responsibilities
As a PhD student you will be enrolled in a graduate program at the Department of Mathematical Sciences, as well as take part in the national WASP graduate school. Both are international research environments, giving ample opportunities for many inspiring conversations, a lot of autonomous work, and (if the circumstances allow for it) some travel. You will be taking courses to expand your knowledge of the field, as well as doing research and writing your thesis. You are expected to develop your own ideas and communicate scientific results orally as well as in written form. In addition, the position will normally include 20% departmental work, mostly teaching duties.

Contract terms
Full-time temporary employment. The position is limited to a maximum of five years, four years of studies and up to one year of departmental work distributed during the whole employment period.

Qualifications
Applicants must have a strong background and interest in mathematical sciences. They must have obtained a master's degree (or equivalent) in mathematics, applied mathematics, or other relevant field, or be expect to complete such degree by the time the employment starts.
Fluency in English is required, as well as good communication and presentation skills in oral and written English. Good team-working skills are also a requirement.

Experience in some of the following areas (in alphabetical order) may be meritorious: convex analysis; functional analysis; numerical analysis; optimization; stochastic analysis. Good programming skills may also be meritorious.

In the application, you should include all relevant work such as bachelor's or master's thesis and articles (provide an English summary if necessary) that you have authored or co-authored. Evidence of mathematical problem solving skills is significant, besides course grades.
