The Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering has about 290 employees encompassing a broad theoretical knowledge base, from engineering science to the social sciences to the humanities, as well as design-based, artistic research. The combination of all of these perspectives allows for great interdisciplinary advancement in the field and a broader discussion of various aspects of sustainability. Together, we provide a comprehensive environment for architecture and civil engineering, well equipped to take on the common challenges of building a sustainable future.
Information about the project
The research project is placed at Building Services Engineering (BSE). BSE is first of all about the functional requirements (thermal comfort, air quality, etc.) in buildings and the design, dimensioning and control of technical systems (heating, ventilation, air conditioning, i.e. HVAC) to meet the functional requirements.
The research project is about the combined energy performance and indoor environment in school buildings. The project will be based on Energy performance certificates (EPC) and measured/observed indoor environment parameters (indoor air quality and thermal comfort) in a number of school buildings. The project will be able to utilize and build on measurements and surveys of indoor environments in school buildings in an ongoing research project. The aim is to develop relations between EPC and the indoor environment parameters. The R&D project involves both theory (simulations) and field measurements and may include laboratory measurements. The division has its own laboratory and the field measurements will be carried out in buildings under normal operation (e.g. by Lokalförvaltningen Göteborgs stad). Results from the project will be used to characterize existing school buildings and to develop guidelines for new school buildings.
As a PhD student your major responsibility is to pursue your own doctoral studies. You are expected to develop your own scientific concepts and communicate the results of your research in major journals and conferences. You will collaborate with our industrial and academic partners and will conduct state-of-the-art modelling and experimental work.
You will also follow PhD courses, be involved in teaching activities, and participate in international conferences and networks. You are expected to write a licentiate thesis within 2-3 years and defend your doctoral thesis within 4-5 years. The position will include up to 20 % of teaching and other departmental work
Our undergraduate courses are normally taught in Swedish, although the graduate level teaching is in English. Thus, good language skills are required. Applicants who do not have Swedish as native language should be able to teach in Swedish after two years of employment. .
Full-time temporary employment. The position is limited to a maximum of five years.
For this specific position a degree in civil or mechanical or engineering physics is meritorious. Experience from misc. tools (e.g. MatLab, IDA ICE) together with hands on experience with heating, cooling and/or control systems is meritorious. Analytical skills for the statistical analyses is also meritorious.
Excellent English communication skills are needed for research and publication purposes. The ability to communicate in Swedish is also of great value for this project, but not a prerequisite. The project will run in cooperation with school authorities, hence the candidate is expected to have excellent collaboration skills.
The applicant should also have the ambition to take on responsibility and ability to work independently towards set goals. Previous experiences in research, publications and teaching is valuable.
