Offer Description
Information about the research group
The Group for Advanced Receiver Development (GARD) at Chalmers is a leading research group in the field of Terahertz instrumentation for radioastronomy. Our team, composed of scientists, applied physicists, and engineers, is dedicated to advancing the field of superconducting electronics and terahertz technologies. Our research is focused on material science, low-temperature physics, thin-film technology and microwave engineering. This multidisciplinary approach enables us to create some of the most advanced and sensitive instruments for radio astronomy and environmental sciences.
Internationally recognized for our state-of-the-art Terahertz instrumentation, GARD is at the forefront of radio astronomy technology. Our track record includes significant contributions to major international projects such as Herschel HIFI, ALMA, and APEX.
GARD collaborates closely with astronomers to design and develop the future instruments necessary to explore and ultimately answer some of the greatest unresolved questions of the universe.
Major responsibilities
We are seeking a prospective PhD student to engage in the design and measurement of advanced wideband waveguide structures across THz and microwave frequencies. The successful candidate will also focus on the design and characterization of integrated THz mixers at cryogenic temperatures, enhancing their performance for wideband applications. This role involves analyzing results, conducting simulations, deriving conclusions, and disseminating findings through presentations and publications.
As a PhD student, your primary responsibility is to lead and conduct research, often in collaboration with a team. You are expected to continuously develop your skills while contributing innovative ideas to the team. A collaborative spirit is essential, along with the ability to work both independently and as part of a team. We prioritize candidates who demonstrate self-motivation, attention to detail, and strong problem-solving capabilities.
Your major responsibilities will include pursuing your doctoral studies, developing your own scientific concepts, and effectively communicating your research findings both verbally and in writing. The position also includes teaching responsibilities at Chalmers' undergraduate level and other duties, which will account for approximately 20% of your employed time.

Qualifications
We seek a candidate with a Master's degree in electrical engineering, applied physics, or materials science, corresponding to at least 240 higher education credits (or its equivalent), with above-average grades. The ideal applicant must exhibit a strong proficiency in English, both in writing and speaking.
Key requirements for this role include hands-on experience in electromagnetics or high-frequency electronics simulations. Candidates must also possess a high level of motivation and the capacity to collaborate effectively as part of a team. We value individuals who show self-motivation, keen attention to detail, and robust problem-solving skills.
Contract terms
Full-time temporary employment. The position is limited to a maximum of five years.
