We are looking for a PhD student in Sustainable systems, with a focus on environmental management and environmental technology.

The position is linked to a national, transdisciplinary centre of excellence called the Biogas Solutions Research Center (BSRC). The centre co-produces new and relevant knowledge through collaboration between different scientific disciplines, and between researchers and practitioners from industry and public organizations. BRC contributes to knowledge on where and how biogas solutions can contribute to improved resource efficiency. Within the centre scientists from two universities are cooperating – Linköping university (LiU) and the Swedish agricultural university (SLU) – with representatives from about 50 private and public organizations, covering all parts of the biogas system. BSRC is funded by these universities, partners, and the Swedish Energy Agency. All PhD positions advertised by BSRC will be adapted to the research program and plans of BSRC, and to match the partners' interests, thereby ensuring long-term skills supply to industry and academia.

Your work assignments
Biogas solutions are multifunctional and thus can contribute to solving several sustainability problems in parallel, thereby constituting role models for the circular society. There are great opportunities for increasing the production of biogas, biofertilizers and other products and services, both in Sweden and internationally. In most European countries, the biogas production has grown dramatically in recent decades, but there are still important expansion opportunities since only a minor share of the potential is exploited. Even if the general regulations of the EU influence the biogas systems in member countries, biogas has long got very limited attention in the different EU strategies and policy programmes.  A distinct change is, however, discernible. Several new strategies launched under EU’s Green deal encourage biogas solutions for e.g. replacing natural gas, decreasing methane emissions and create more sustainable food production.

The purpose of the research connected to this position is to develop improved understanding of the relations between different governance levels. The research will focus on the development of policies, regulations and initiatives in the EU and analyse how this influences biogas development in Sweden and other EU countries.

As a PhD student you are focusing on your research education and the research projects in which you are involved. The work may also include teaching or other departmental duties, limited to 20% of full time.

Your workplace
The division of Environmental Technology and Management is a transdisciplinary research milieu of almost 50 employees, with backgrounds from several different research fields, countries, and cultures. In research, collaboration and teaching there is a focus on how to manage and avoid sustainability challenges, for example, by developing more efficient systems, organizations, products, and services.

Your qualifications
You have a master degree from a social science or interdisciplinary programme, e.g. with an energy or environmental profile, or completed courses with a minimum of 240 credits, at least 60 in advanced courses with a focus on sustainable systems; or otherwise acquired corresponding knowledge. Documented experience and knowledge regarding policy analysis, international environmental politics, the EU and renewable energy, as well as experience with qualitative and quantitative research methods, are an advantage for the position.

Due to the competence centre’s co-production of new knowledge, it is a merit to have good communicative skills and pedagogic competence. This employment requires advanced skills in English, both spoken and written, as the PhD student will use English for data collection, documentation, presentation of results, etc. It is an advantage if you also have advanced skills in spoken and written Swedish.

Terms of employment
When taking up the post, you will be admitted to the program for doctoral studies. More information about the doctoral studies at each faculty is available here .

The employment has a duration of four years' full-time equivalent. You will initially be employed for a period of one year. The employment will subsequently be renewed for periods of maximum duration two years, depending on your progress through the study plan. The employment may be extended up to a maximum of five years, based on the amount of teaching and departmental duties you have carried out. Further extensions can be granted in special circumstances.

Starting date
September 1st 2022, or by agreement.

Salary and employment benefits
The salary of doctoral students is determined according to a locally negotiated salary progression.
