The Structural Engineering research subject, at the Division of Structural and Fire Engineering at Luleå University of Technology seeks to employ a PhD student to work with Digital twins in structural assessment. The position is included in a national research project with co-financing from the building industry (SBUF by Skanska AB). The research group currently consists of approximately 30 senior researchers and PhD students.

Subject description
Structural Engineering includes loads, design, sustainability, load carrying capacity, repair and strengthening, of buildings and civil engineering structures made of concrete, steel, wood and other materials, separately or in combination, at normal conditions, in cold climate and in fire.

Project description
Routine bridge and tunnel inspections usually consist of visual observations – a highly subjective procedure. Furthermore, knowledge transfer from one inspection period to another becomes difficult when different inspectors carry out the investigation.

Many short- to medium-span bridges are located in remote regions with difficult access and rough terrain. In such cases, traditional inspection and monitoring methods becomes cumbersome and more expensive. Therefore, the current project will contribute with alternatives to traditional health monitoring approaches that are low-cost, suitable for field application, and easily deployable. To achieve this we will develop and implement vision-based technologies as an alternative toolbox for bridge inspectors. Such a toolbox can prevent failures and allow for increased utilization through early detection of damage and prevention measures. The current project would also contribute in improving the accuracy and efficiency of bridge inspections by eliminating the human error, as well as provide the opportunity of a historical record of the progress of deterioration.

With better data collection from novel inspections, prediction tools would gain robustness and be able to better inform decision-makers in the efficient allocation of resources.

Duties
As a PhD student you will be educated in scientific thinking and writing. The assignment implies to develop the skills to critically, independently and creatively, as well as with academic rigor, identify and formulate problem both theoretically and practically. Logically, it is included to understand corresponding possibilities with the technique that is developed also. Moreover, you will develop the skills on how the research results can be applied in the building sector as the work is closely related to industry. You are part of a group of doctoral students in the research area and you collaborate with other researchers at LTU and the construction industry in Sweden as well as with the working group that is linked to the project. You will also cultivate international contacts.

Qualifications
A suitable background for the position is a MSc degree in civil engineering or equivalent. Experience with digital-image correlation, building information modelling (BIM), finite-element modelling is considered a plus. It is a requirement that the applicant speaks, reads and writes English unhindered.

Employment
Employment as a PhD student is limited to 4 years, teaching and other department duties like teaching duties and other duties related to research and development in general at the subject may be added with max 20%.
