The Department of Romance Studies and Classics is placed at the Faculty of Humanities and has about 70 employees and around 1,000 students per year. Romance linguistics is a leading research area covering the following specializations: discourse and interaction analysis, historical linguistics and editorial philology, sociolinguistics, second language acquisition and education, syntax, semantics and translation studies.

As a PhD student you have the opportunity to participate in The Faculty's Doctoral school , which offers courses of interdisciplinarity and cooperation across subject borders. This gives a chance to improve the quality of your education thanks to the interchange of PhD students from other subjects and departments.

Project description
The doctoral dissertation will be conducted within the Romance languages for which we offer education, namely French, Italian, Portuguese and Spanish. It is also possible to choose Romance languages general orientation.

Qualification requirements
In order to meet the general entry requirements, the applicant must have completed a second-cycle degree, completed courses equivalent to at least 240 higher education credits, of which 60 credits must be in the second cycle, or have otherwise acquired equivalent knowledge in Sweden or elsewhere.

To meet the specific entry requirements, the general syllabus for doctoral studies in the field of Romance Languages stipulates that:

- the candidate has passed advanced level courses of at least 30 credits in French, Italian, Portuguese or Spanish including a degree project of at least 15 credits.

- the candidate possesses knowledge of English equivalent to the level of English 6. This does not apply to students who have undergone university education where English is required.

The entry requirements must also be met by persons who acquired corresponding skills within or outside the country and by the deadline for application.

Selection
The basis for selection is the applicant’s capacity to complete the studies. The selection is made on the following criteria:

  • General previous education. The assessment takes into consideration the depth and broadness of previous education.
  • Scientific production. Based on first-cycle and second-cycle degree projects and, if applicable, other scientific production, the applicant’s capacity is assessed on: critical ability, analytical ability, creativity, independence and scientific diligence. The assessment must also consider the time aspect, i.e. the extent to which the applicant has completed previous scientific assignments within a given time frame. Assessment is also made of the applicant’s academic development based on a comparison between scientific productions.
  • Research plan. The applicant must give an account of the intended research area, which must contain formulation of problem(s) and a description of how the research will be conducted. This is assessed based on relevance, originality and feasibility within the time frame (a period corresponding to four years of full-time studies for a doctoral degree and two years of full-time studies for a licentiate degree).
  • Cooperative ability. The applicant is assessed, for example, on references, certificates or interviews.
  • In addition. There are strict requirements regarding the applicant’s ability to adequately express himself/herself in academic French, Italian, Portuguese or Spanish. An assessment of this is made on previous scientific works.
  • In the admission and selection of applicants the department board must consider the regulations set out by the Faculty of Humanities.

    Terms of employment
    Only a person who will be or has already been admitted to a third-cycle programme may be appointed to a doctoral studentship.

    The term of the initial contract may not exceed one year. The employment may be extended for a maximum of two years at a time. However, the total period of employment may not exceed the equivalent of four years of full-time study.

    Doctoral students should primarily devote themselves to their own education, but may engage in teaching, research, and administration at a maximum of 20 % of a full-time position.
