Uppsala University is a comprehensive research-intensive university with a strong international standing. Our ultimate goal is to conduct education and research of the highest quality and relevance to make a long-term difference in society. Our most important assets are all the individuals whose curiosity and dedication make Uppsala University one of Sweden’s most exciting workplaces. The Department of Medical Sciences is a large clinical institution with more than 250 employees and over 900 additional coworkers connected via the Uppsala University Hospital. The Department of Medical Sciences has a broad research profile with strong research groups in a number of different areas. The research carried out at the department is performed in close connection with the clinical activities at the Uppsala University Hospital, which includes both basic studies on the causes of a variety of illnesses and the development and evaluation of improved diagnostics and new treatment methods. More information about the Department of Medical Sciences can be found at .

At the department, the Psychiatry Research Group studies the major psychiatric disorders based on a gene-environment interaction model where psychiatric conditions are considered to arise due to an interplay between biological, psychological and social risk factors.

Within Psychiatry, the subgroup ”Uppsala mood, brain and behaviour” headed by Associate Professor Malin Gingnell investigates the neurobiology associated with emotional states. We use experimental psychology in the lab, through Internet and during brain imaging (PET, MR, EEG) to gain a better understanding of emotion processing in both healthy participants and patient groups.

As part of the international research project RE-MEND (Building Resilience against Mental illness during Endocrine-sensitive life stages) we study the interaction between the hormonal challenges during puberty and basic psychological functions such as approach behavior, fear extinction, emotion regulation and risk taking. This part of the project uses online psychological assessments of behavior in large scale longitudinal cohorts and combine these with biomedical data. Data collection is performed both within Sweden and in Bangladesh.
