Ph.D. student in Pervasive and Mobile Computing

The Computer Science division at the department of Computer Science, Electrical and Space Engineering at Luleå University of Technology (LTU) is searching for a PhD student in the subject of Pervasive and Mobile Computing to work with software architectures for edge computing within 5G mobile networks.

You will be part of a research group that works with software systems, distributed systems, mobile systems and Internet-based communication. You will acquire unique knowledge and skills and be part of a creative research environment, working in cooperation with industry partners.

Subject description
Pervasive and mobile computing address distributed systems and mobile networks, which enable mobility, ubiquity and interactivity of computers, data, software and users.

Research and innovation project
The PhD project will be carried out within and financed by Arctic 5G Test Network, which is a collaborative research and innovation project within the Interreg North programme that LTU will start with the university of Oulu, Finland. The project is also focusing on helping companies with innovative and pioneering IT solutions with an emphasis on SMEs.

Project description
The scientific objective is to study container orchestration and container profiles for multi-access edge computing, where the backend of mobile services can easily be moved between different locations on the edge of the mobile network, depending on the users' mobility. The studies will both be carried out from a mobile service operator perspective, where resource management and distribution of containers take place in a more or less dynamic manner and also from an end user perspective where different network configurations and architectures are compared against each other from a capacity and performance point of view.

A test environment will be established where developed solutions can be demonstrated. Applications and use cases will be discussed with the companies involved in the research and innovation project Arctic 5G Test Network as described above

The project will be carried out in Luleå.

You will work in the above described project and participate in activities in Arctic 5G Test Network. You will take courses while doing dissertation work in the form of e.g. literature, article, design studies, construction and programming tasks, theory development, analysis and presentations. The research subject is multi-disciplinary and includes both science and technology. Results will be published in English in journals and international conferences. Teaching and other duties at the division and / or department exist for graduate students, which is limited to a maximum of one year of the total period not exceeding five years.

We are looking for a skilled, analytic and motivated colleague that can perform advance research, both independently and in cooperation with the rest of the team. The necessary background for applicants is a master degree in Computer Science, or equivalent. The applicant must be proficient in software development and computer science and be fluent in oral and written dissemination in English. Specific depth in mathematics, computer security or encryption is valuable but not a requirement. It is an advantage if you have previous experience from research and publication.
