Deadline:

Skilled and committed employees are a crucial factor in the success of Linköping University. And we need more of them. Our core expertise comes from teachers and researchers, but a successful university requires experienced and motivated employees in many fields. Everyone is important. We need to recruit many new employees thanks to, among all, an expansion in our research activity. We need you here. We look forward to receiving your application!

The Department of Computer and Information Science was founded in 1983 but its roots go back to the early 1970s. It is one of the largest computer science departments in northern Europe.

Our research covers a broad spectrum of fields, from core to applied computer sciences. Its vast scope also benefits our undergraduate and graduate programmes, and we now teach courses in several engineering programmes at bachelor’s and master’s levels, as well as the programmes in statistics, cognitive science and innovative programming.

LINKÖPING UNIVERSITY
Hereby advertises a position as

PhD student in natural language processing
formally based at the Department of Computer and Information Science

Wallenberg AI, Autonomous Systems and Software Program (WASP) is Sweden’s largest individual research program ever, a major national initiative for strategically motivated basic research, education and faculty recruitment. The program addresses research on artificial intelligence and autonomous systems acting in collaboration with humans, adapting to their environment through sensors, information and knowledge, and forming intelligent systems-of-systems. The vision of WASP is excellent research and competence in artificial intelligence,
autonomous systems and software for the benefit of Swedish industry. Read more: https://wasp-sweden.org/

The graduate school within WASP is dedicated to provide the skills needed to analyze, develop, and contribute to the interdisciplinary area of artificial intelligence, autonomous systems and software. Through an ambitious program with research visits, partner universities, and visiting lecturers, the graduate school actively supports forming a strong multi-disciplinary and international professional network between PhD-students, researchers and industry. Read more: https://wasp-sweden.org/graduate-school/

Duties
Those appointed to a PhD position shall primarily devote themselves to their studies. They may, however, also work with educational tasks, research, and administration. Before a PhD has been awarded, duties of this kind may not comprise more than 20 per cent of full time.

The present position is tied to the research project ‘Interpreting and Grounding Pre-trained Representations for Natural Language Processing’. The project is a collaboration between Linköping University, Chalmers University of Technology, and Recorded Future AB.

Building computers that understand human language is one of the central goals in artificial intelligence. A recent breakthrough on the way towards this goal is the development of neural models that learn deep contextualized representations of language. However, while these models have substantially advanced the state of the art in natural language processing (NLP) for a wide range of tasks, our understanding of the learned representations and our repertoire of techniques for integrating them with other knowledge representations and reasoning facilities remain severely limited. To address these gaps, this project will develop new methods for the interpretation, grounding, and integration of deep contextualized representations of language.

Qualifications
Only those who are or have been admitted to third-cycle study programmes may be appointed to doctoral studentships.

The general eligibility requirement for admission to third-cycle studies is a completed Master’s degree, or completion of course requirements of at least 240 ECTS, of which at least 60 ECTS are at Master level, or an equivalent level of knowledge acquired in Sweden or abroad. Admission to PhD studies in the research area of computer science requires either a Master’s degree in the field of the research area, or completion of courses of at least 60 ECTS in the field of the research area, including an independent project of at least 15 ECTS. Out of these 60 ECTS, at least 30 ECTS must be at the Master’s level.

You must have documented ability to take advantage of and build upon previous research, as well as the ability to independently define, motivate, and plan research projects. You can document these abilities by e.g. your Master’s thesis or publications in scientific journals or conferences.

Appointment time
The initial appointment to a doctoral studentship may apply for no longer than one year. An appointment may be renewed for no more than two years at a time. A person may be appointed to a doctoral studentship for a total of eight years. The total employment period may, however, not exceed the time corresponding to full-time third-cycle study for four years.

Starting date
