The PhD position is located in Uppsala within the research program Natural Resources and Sustainable Development, Department of Earth Sciences, Uppsala University, and will involve strong collaborations with the Stockholm Resilience Centre at Stockholm University. The research within the Department of Earth Sciences of Uppsala University focuses on subjects that range from the Earth’s core to the atmosphere, on scales from submicroscopic structures in minerals to the formation of mountains andoceans, and from basic research on natural resources to research on how humans manage these resources in a sustainable way (for more information, see: www.geo.uu.se ). The research of the Natural Resources and Sustainable Development Programme within the Department focuses on the different dimensions of sustainable development. We consider the environment and its natural resources and ecosystem services as an overarching foundation for society and economy and aim at providing knowledge on how to utilize natural resources in a sustainable way. The position is part of the the LANDPATHS programme: The multifunctional LANDscapes of the future: barriers and drivers for transformation PATHwayS (In Swedish: LANDSVÄGAR Framtidens multifunktionella landskap – hinder och drivkrafter längs omställningens vägar), funded by Swedish Environmental Protection Agency (Naturvårdsverket). The goal of the programme is to develop transformative governance strategies that foster sustainable practices in biodiverse, multifunctional landscapes.
The PhD project will seek to understand how stakeholders and citizens can best deliberate over trade-offs and value conflicts when working in support of multifunctional landscape governance. Recognising that citizen engagement is a distinct and complementary strategy to stakeholder engagement, the project will examine the theory and practice of citizen identification and engagement, and contrast this with stakeholder-focused approaches.
The project will include participatory research with stakeholder and citizen groups to deliberate on ‘imaginaries’ of future landscapes, and comparative analyses to identify the effects of citizen and stakeholder deliberation on the articulation of imaginaries and on the identification of transformative governance pathways towards imagined futures. An examination of the extent to which deliberative processes can build capacity and lead to practical outcomes will also provide insight into how to best combine stakeholder and citizen knowledge to co-create research activities across different types of landscapes.
The applicant shall have a university master degree in political sciences, sustainability studies, environmental sciences or similar, and research interests relevant to the LANDPATHS programme. The successful candidate will have experience in policy and/or discourse analysis, stakeholder mapping and engagement techniques, and interdisciplinary research work.
Skills and experiences in leading or working in collaborative projects, organising and facilitating stakeholder involvement processes, and engaging diverse land use stakeholders (e.g. in interviews, surveys, workshops) is an advantage. Skills in Swedish are desired.
