PhD student in Medical Science

Updated: 4 months ago
Deadline: 01 Feb 2024

We have the power of over 40,000 students and co-workers. Students who provide hope for the future. Co-workers who contribute to Linköping University meeting the challenges of the day. Our fundamental values rest on credibility, trust and security. By having the courage to think freely and innovate, our actions together, large and small, contribute to a better world. We look forward to receiving your application!

We are looking for a PhD student in Medical Science.

Your work assignments

Your work will entail the investigation of how Wnt signaling, a cell-to-cell communication pathway conserved across the animal kingdom, acts as master regulator of cell fate. While the mechanisms of canonical Wnt pathway have been extensively studied, it is yet not understood how nuclear protein β-catenin can drive the wide arrays of transcriptional responses depending on the context or developmental stage. You will investigate how the activation of Wnt signaling leads to promiscuous protein-protein interactions that, in a complex but deterministic manner, steer genomic function to regulate and fine-tune cell fate.

As a PhD student, you devote most of your time to doctoral studies and the research projects of which you are part. Your work may also include teaching or other departmental duties, up to a maximum of 20% of full-time.

Your qualifications

You have graduated at Master’s level in molecular biology with focus in neuroscience or completed courses with a minimum of 240 credits, at least 60 of which must be in advanced courses. Alternatively, you have gained essentially corresponding knowledge in another way.

Among the required qualification, the applicant will possess experience with advanced cell culture systems, which must include work with forebrain organoids and intestinal organoids.

In addition, the candidate must have experience with the following technologies:

- CUT&RUN

- single-cell RNA-seq analysis

- qRT-PCR

- Zebrafish embryo xenografts

- Standard molecular biology techniques (e.g., DNA cloning)

Meritorious will be considered experience in:

- Microscopy-based imaging

- Immunohistochemistry

- In vitro neuronal differentiation.

You are a curiosity-drive person, fascinated by the complexity of biological systems and their ability to self-organize. You are also drawn to teaching and supervision of younger students, and to work in cooperation in an internationally-oriented research group.

Your application must contain a letter of intent describing how your qualification make you a good fit in the research group.

Moreover, a brief (2-page) scientific proposal must be attached in which you propose how to discover the mechanism of transduction and the evolutionary origin of Wnt Signalling using model organisms and/or organoids systems.

Your workplace

Division of Molecular Medicine and Virology , at the Department of Biomedical and Clinical Sciences , carries out research, undergraduate and postgraduate education within Medical Science.
