The Department of Biomedical and Clinical Sciences is one of the university’s largest departments, with operations mainly in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences.

Our aim is to engage in medical and biomedical education and research of high international standing. At undergraduate level the department is responsible for most of the medical program, the speech and language pathology program and the biomedical program. We are looking for a PhD student in Medical Science, formally based at the Department of Biomedical and Clinical Sciences.

Your work assignments
As a doctoral student, you devote most of your time to doctoral studies and the research projects of which you are part. Your work may also include teaching or other departmental duties, up to a maximum of 20% of full-time.

As a PhD student you will work on a project aimed to understand the cellular consequences of DNA damage in normal and malignant cells. You will investigate different aspects of Double Strand Break (DSB) response as DNA ends processing, chromatin dynamics and (mis)repair. The research will be of experimental character, including cell culture, genetic manipulations, analysis of genomic rearrangements and telomere assays. The activities include literature review and lab working. 

Your workplace
Your workplace will be at the Division of Molecular Medicine and Virology (MMV) , at the Department of Biomedical and Clinical Sciences (BKV) . BKV carries out research, undergraduate and postgraduate education within Health Sciences.

Your qualifications
The applicant should be highly motivated and hold at Master’s level in Molecular Biology, Biotechnology or related subjects with a minimum of 240 credits, at least 60 of which must be in advanced courses. Alternatively, you have gained essentially corresponding knowledge in another way. Candidates expected to graduate before December 2022 will also be considered.

The applicant should be proficient in spoken and written English, with excellent communication and teamwork skills.

Applications are expected to include a letter of motivation detailing research interests and expertise and a CV. Previous knowledge of genome stability, DNA damage response and telomere biology is required. In addition, the applicant should have experience in:

  • Molecular Biology research at university level
  • mammalian cell culture
  • mammalian cells transient transfectionand viral transduction 
  • plasmid amplification
  • Protein detection by immunoblot
  • PCR, RT-PCR, qPCR

The following working experience are also seen as meriting:

  • mammalian cell sub-cloning
  • drug treatment and survival assay
  • sgRNAs design
  • DNA cloning
  • Protein detection by immunofluorescence
  • ddPCR
  • TRAP assay
  • Metaphase analysis
  • Live cell imaging
  • Chromatin mobility analysis

Qualified to PhD studentships are only those who are or have been admitted to graduate studies.

Terms of employment
In connection with your admission to the doctoral program, your employment as a doctoral student is handled. More information about the doctoral studies at each faculty is available at Doctoral studies at Linköping University

The employment has a duration of four years’ full-time equivalent. You will initially be employed for a period of one year. The employment will subsequently be renewed for periods of maximum duration two years, depending on your progress through the study plan. The employment may be extended up to a maximum of five years, based on the amount of teaching and departmental duties you have carried out. Further extensions can be granted in special circumstances.

Starting date
August 2022 or upon agreement, but no later than January 2023.

Salary and employment benefits
The salary of doctoral students is determined according to a locally negotiated salary progression.
