The Department of Biomedical and Clinical Sciences is one of the university’s largest departments, with operations mainly in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences.

Our aim is to engage in medical and biomedical education and research of high international standing. At undergraduate level the department is responsible for most of the medical program, the speech and language pathology program and the biomedical program. We are looking for a PhD student in Medical Science, formally based at the Department of Biomedical and Clinical Sciences.

Your work assignments
As a doctoral student, you devote most of your time to doctoral studies and the research projects of which you are part. Your work may also include teaching or other departmental duties, up to a maximum of 20% of full-time.

As a doctoral student you will participate in the project: “Language disorder in children and adolescents during the school-years: conditions, abilities and growth”, which is part of the larger project “Education on equal terms for children with developmental language disorder? – A study of goal attainment, experiences and participation”. Factors in focus in this project are: to what degree students with language disorder reach the learning goals in school, how these individuals and their caregivers perceive the situation in school and the support offered, and how students with language disorder participate in learning activities. The doctoral project aims to identify risks and facilitating factors related to education for students with developmental language disorder (DLD). Using these results as a point of departure, support and interventions for students with DLD will be designed and evaluated. The project will thereby contribute to increased knowledge regarding improved education for students with DLD. The doctoral project includes two parts; one part that explores needs, challenges, and well-functioning practices in education, and one intervention part where support for students with DLD is designed and evaluated. The doctoral project includes both qualitative and quantitative methods.

As a doctoral student you will be able to develop your knowledge and competences independently, but together with an experienced project group and other doctoral students in the department. You will be able to influence the design of the doctoral project within the overarching frames for the larger research project.

Your workplace
Your workplace will be in the Division of Sensory Organs and Communication (SOK) at the Department of Biomedical and Clinical Sciences (BKV) . BKV carries out research, undergraduate and postgraduate education within Health Sciences.

Your qualifications
You have graduated at Master’s level in Speech-Language Pathology/Logopedics with a minimum of 240 credits, at least 60 of which must be in advanced courses in this area. Alternatively, you have gained essentially corresponding knowledge in another way.

Qualified to PhD studentships are only those who are or have been admitted to graduate studies.

You are motivated by a wish to better understand and improve the conditions for individuals with developmental language disorders during the schoolyears. You are familiar with guidelines and regulations for special services in Swedish schools, and the work conducted by different professional groups. Previous work experience with children and adolescents with language disorders in the school context will be particularly valued.

The research project includes interdisciplinary work, and a basic requirement is therefore that the applicant is interested in work across disciplines. Previous training and experiences from both qualitative (e.g., participant observations or interviews) and quantitative (e.g., experimental studies or intervention studies) research methods are valuable. The ability to work independently, but with support from an established research group and an active doctoral cohort is central.

The work includes collaboration, which requires that you possess a strong ability to communicate in both spoken and written Swedish and English. Personal qualities and suitability will significantly affect the selection decision.

Terms of employment
In connection with your admission to the doctoral program, your employment as a doctoral student is handled. More information about the doctoral studies at each faculty is available at.

The employment has a duration of four years’ full-time equivalent. You will initially be employed for a period of one year. The employment will subsequently be renewed for periods of maximum duration two years, depending on your progress through the study plan. The employment may be extended up to a maximum of five years, based on the amount of teaching and departmental duties you have carried out. Further extensions can be granted in special circumstances.

The salary of doctoral students is determined according to a locally negotiated salary progression.
