The Department of Clinical and Experimental Medicine (IKE) is one of the university’s largest departments, with operations mainly in the Faculty of Health Sciences.
Our aim is to engage in medical and biomedical education and research of high international standing. At undergraduate level the department is responsible for most of the medical programme, the speech and language pathology programme and the medical biology programme.

PhD student in Medical science formally based at the Department of Clinical and Experimental Medicine (IKE)
Duties
As a PhD student you will primarily devote yourself to your research. As a PhD student you are limited devoted to work with education and administration up to 20 percent of full time.
As a PhD student you will participate in the project: “The effect of paternal diet on early embryonic development and its potential mechanisms”
The candidate will investigate how a high sugar consumption in the father affects the embryonic developmental tempo and quality in model organism Drosophila melanogaster, the fruit fly. The candidate will further on investigate relevant non-coding RNAs in sperm from fly via oligo-biotin pull-down, to later inhibit its function in the embryo.
Qualifications
Qualified to PhD studentships are only those who are or have been admitted to graduate studies.
Prospective candidates should have a strong previous experience working with Drosophila melanogaster, where previous work with early embryos are of merit. The candidate should be familiar with the molecular and genetic toolbox available for Drosophila work, as well as housing and crossings of flies. Previous work with oligo-biotin pull-down and RNA-sequencing is of merit. As the project will contain elements of bioinformatics analysis, we are looking for a candidate capable of basal analysis in Ubuntu environment and programming in R, with the major focus on sequencing analysis. Background knowledge and understanding of epigenetic inheritance, metabolism and reproduction is required. Strong communication skills in English are required, as well as an ability to work independently in a collaborative setting.
Appointment time
The appointment will be until further notice for a maximum of one year at a time. A doctoral student may not be employed during a period not exceeding eight years. The total time of appointment must not exceed the equivalent of four years´ full time research training.

The salary for PhD students is based on the department’s salary scale.
