We are looking for a PhD student in Medical Science.

Your work assignments

The candidate will work in a project that use Drosophilamelanogaster to study inter- or transgenerational epigenetic inheritance. More specifically, the doctoral student will be utilizing the latest chromatin profiling techniques such as Cut & Run in combination with small RNA sequencing to:

 1)      Investigate the plasticity of sperm chromatin and metabolism in response to environmental challenges such as dietary shifts.

2)      Understand how paternal sperm responses to environmental challenges influence chromatin remodelling during ZGA.

3)      Understand the interplay between sperm metabolism and the small RNAs in modulating the de novo heterochromatin formation in early embryogenesis.

As a doctoral student, you devote most of your time to doctoral studies and the research projects of which you are part. Your work may also include teaching or other departmental duties, up to a maximum of 20% of full-time.

Your qualifications

 You have graduated at Master’s level Advanced Biomedicine or completed courses with a minimum of 240 credits, at least 60 of which must be in advanced courses. Alternatively, you have gained essentially corresponding knowledge in another way.

The candidate must have documented experience of Drosophila melanogaster, both theoretical and practical. You are expected to have completed Genetics and epigenetics courses corresponding to a minimum of 30 credits as well as Bioinformatics and statistics courses corresponding to at least 20 credits.

You must have:
1) Knowledge of the Drosophila Melanogaster 3D genome assembly landscape regarding heterochromatin assembly in early stage 5 embryos.
2) Be able to, independently, perform statistical analysis in R, Exploratory data analysis and differential gene expression.
3) Be able to, independently, perform molecular biology techniques with regards to Drosophila Melanogaster such as: qPCR, Western blot, Primer design, genotyping by PCR and immunostainings.
4) Skills regarding the dissection of Drosophila testes, gut, and imaginal discs.
5) Proficient skills in designing Inter- and Transgenerational experiments.
6) Fluent English language skills (speaking and writing)

Your workplace

You will be employed at the Division of Cell and Neurobiology  at the Department of Biomedical and Clinical Sciences . The department carries out research, undergraduate and postgraduate education within Medical Science.

The employment

The employment has a duration of four years’ full-time equivalent. You will initially be employed for a period of one year. The employment will subsequently be renewed for periods of maximum duration two years, depending on your progress through the study plan. The employment may be extended up to a maximum of five years, based on the amount of teaching and departmental duties you have carried out. Further extensions can be granted in special circumstances.
