The Department of Biomedical and Clinical Sciences is one of the university’s largest departments, with operations mainly in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences.

Our aim is to engage in medical and biomedical education and research of high international standing. At undergraduate level the department is responsible for most of the medical program, the speech and language pathology program and the biomedical program. We are looking for a PhD student in Medical Science.


Your work assignments

As a PhD student you will participate in the project:  “Modulation of mucosal tissues and immune cells by HIV-1 infection”.  Immunovirology is the study of viruses’ effects on the immune system and even if we have a great knowledge today regarding HIVs effect on the immune system, there are still many unanswered questions that needs to be answered to develop a vaccine and improve the antiviral therapy.  The overall objective/purpose of the project is to gain a better understanding of the primary HIV-1 infection and the immunomodulatory effects HIV exert on mucosa and immune cells. In the research group we work in a collaborative fashion with our research projects, and you can be involved in these projects as well.

As a PhD student, you devote most of your time to doctoral studies and the research projects of which you are part. Your work may also include teaching or other departmental duties, up to a maximum of 20% of full-time.


Your qualifications

You have graduated at Master’s level in Molecular Biology with a minimum of 240 credits, at least 60 of which must be in advanced courses in Molecular Biology. Alternatively, you have gained essentially corresponding knowledge in another way.

Qualified to PhD studentships are only those who are or have been admitted to graduate studies.

The position requires documented and practical experience of the following methods and techniques: Flow cytometry, cell culture, qPCR, molecular cloning, in situ hybridization, structural biology, protein purification. The position also requires that you can communicate fluently in English, both orally and in writing.

Its advantageous if you have previous experience of studies with human viruses.

As a person, you are independent, initiative-taking and flexible. Furthermore, you are social and have good cooperation skills.


Your workplace

Your workplace will be at the Division of Molecular Medicine and Virology (MMV) , at the Department of Biomedical and Clinical Sciences (BKV) . BKV carries out research, undergraduate and postgraduate education within Health Sciences.


The employment

In connection with your admission to the doctoral program, your employment as a PhD student is handled. More information about the doctoral studies at each faculty is available at Doctoral studies at Linköping University

The employment has a duration of four years’ full-time equivalent. You will initially be employed for a period of one year. The employment will subsequently be renewed for periods of maximum duration two years, depending on your progress through the study plan. The employment may be extended up to a maximum of five years, based on the amount of teaching and departmental duties you have carried out. Further extensions can be granted in special circumstances.

Starting date by agreement.
