PhD student in Maritime Archaeology

The Department of Archaeology and Classical Studies is the largest archaeological research environment in Sweden and is appointed as one of Stockholm University’s leading research areas. The Department consists of seven units: Archaeology, Archaeological Research Laboratory, Osteoarchaeological Research Laboratory, Stockholm Numismatic Institute, Classical Archaeology and Ancient History, Centre for the Study of Cultural Evolution, and Centre for Palaeogenetics.

Subject area
The announced position is based in the unit of Archaeology whose profile is archaeology based on interpretative research traditions in the wider humanities. The unit carries out research within the whole chronological field of archaeology, from the Stone Age to the present, with the Nordic area as its main geographical focus.

The position is partly financed by the Centre for Maritime Studies (CEMAS), a collaboration between Stockholm University and the National Maritime and Transport Museums. The PhD student will therefore be a part of both the archaeological research environment and the interdisciplinary maritime research environment at Stockholm University. The research shall deal with maritime archaeology; that is, the study of material traces from human relationships with sea and water in a broad sense.

Qualification requirements
In order to meet the general entry requirements, the applicant must have completed a second-cycle degree, completed courses equivalent to at least 240 higher education credits, of which 60 credits must be in the second cycle, or have otherwise acquired equivalent knowledge in Sweden or elsewhere.

In order to meet the specific entry requirements, the applicant must have completed at least 30 credits in the advanced level of archaeology, including a written paper of at least 15 credits, or have otherwise acquired equivalent knowledge in Sweden or elsewhere.

The specific entry requirements also include that the applicant must have a fluent knowledge of Swedish, Danish, Norwegian or English.

The qualification requirements must be met by the deadline for applications.

Selection
The primary assessment criteria in appointing a doctoral student should be the capacity to benefit from the training. The selection among the eligible candidates will be based on the following criteria. Special attention will be paid to the research plan:

The assessment also takes into consideration the aspect of time, that is, to what extent the applicant has shown the ability to meet his or her previous scientific obligations within given time constraints.  In addition, the scientific progress of the applicant is considered.

Terms of employment 
Only a person who will be or has already been admitted to a third-cycle programme may be appointed to a doctoral studentship.

The term of the initial contract may not exceed one year. The employment may be extended for a maximum of two years at a time. However, the total period of employment may not exceed the equivalent of four years of full-time study.

Doctoral students should primarily devote themselves to their own education, but may engage in teaching, research, and administration corresponding to a maximum of 20 % of a full-time position.
