The Limnology Program at the Department of Ecology and Genetics (www.ieg.uu.se/limnology ) is, together with its field station at the lake Erken (www.ieg.uu.se/erkenlaboratoriet ), an internationally renowned environment for research, education and outreach on the ecology of inland waters.

Project description
Most rivers are highly degraded ecosystems, but there is a large movement to restore them. The restoration of streams and rivers includes the establishment of wetlands, and the removal of dams, which benefits biodiversity and water quality. Both restoration practices entail the expansion of aquatic plants (macrophytes), which can act as strong greenhouse gas sources, but which also sequester carbon and thus act as carbon sinks. The overall climate footprint of macrophytes is at present insufficiently understood. The CLIMIPHY project (https://www.ieg.uu.se/limnology/research/climiphy/ )will investigate the greenhouse gas emission as well as carbon sequestration of different species and communities of macrophytes, in order to enable river restoration practitioners to design plantation schemes that maximize the intended benefits for biodiversity and water quality at minimal climate footprint.

Duties
Your duties include research and coursework within the project’s subject area. Research will comprise controlled experiments as well as field studies of the greenhouse gas emission and carbon sequestration of different species and communities of macrophytes, in collaboration with the other members of the project team. The work will also include interactions with stakeholders and practitioners in river restoration. The PhD education in Sweden lasts 4 years, with corresponding to 3 years for research, and 1 year of studying relevant courses. In addition, we encourage PhD candidates to teach on relevant undergraduate courses, which adds additional time to their contracts.

Qualifications required
To meet the entry requirements for doctoral studies, you must

• hold a Master’s (second-cycle) degree in Limnology, Ecology, Biogeochemistry, Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering or another relevant field, or
• have completed at least 240 credits in higher education with at least 60 credits at Master’s level including an independent project worth at least 15 credits, or
• have acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way.

Other qualifications and characteristics required for the position are:

• Experience and knowledge within one or several of the following fields: limnology, plant ecology, biogeochemistry.
• Driving license for car (EU class B)

We attach great importance to personal qualities such as ability to collaborate within a team, organizational skills, and independence.

Candidates must be able to express themselves very well in English, both orally and in writing.

Qualifications desired: Experience in statistics and programming (e.g. using the R software), as well as in geographical information systems (GIS) is meriting. Experience in conducting laboratory experiments and field work is meriting.

About the employment: The employment is a temporary position according to the Higher Education Ordinance chapter 5 § 7 and covers four years of full-time studies. The salary is set based on a salary scale with a starting salary of SEK 29,000/month (salary revision 2022) and will be adjusted annually. Starting date 1 February 2024 or as agreed.
